Motorola, once the world’s second-largest mobile phone maker, after Nokia Corp. of Finland, has since lost its place to South Korean rival Samsung Electronics Corp. amid fierce global competition and watched earnings slide.
The company lost 49 million dollars in 2007, swinging to a deficit after a profit of 3.6 billion dollars in 2006 as its problems worsened in the tough market for mobile devices.
India’s Tata Motors said Wednesday it had bought British luxury icons Jaguar and Land Rover from ailing US carmaker Ford Motor Co for 2.3 billion dollars.
Tata Motors, part of the sprawling tea-to-outsourcing Tata Group empire, added Ford would contribute up to about 600 million dollars to the Jaguar and Land Rover pension plans.

A farmer got so old that he couldn’t work the fields anymore. So he would spend the day just sitting on the porch.
His son, still working the farm, would look up from time to time and see his father sitting there.
“He’s of no use any more,” the son thought to himself, “he doesn’t do anything!”
One day the son got so frustrated by this, that he built a wooden coffin, dragged it over to the porch, and told his father to get in.
Without saying anything, the father climbed inside. After closing the lid, the son dragged the coffin to the edge of the farm where there was a high cliff.
As he approached the drop, he heard a light tapping on the lid from inside the coffin.
He opened it up.
Still lying there peacefully, the father looked up at his son. “I know you are going to throw me over the cliff, but before you do, may I suggest something?”
“What is it?” replied the son.
“Throw me over the cliff, if you like,” said the father, “but save this good wooden coffin… Your children might need to use it.”

Irina Palm
Sam Garbarski | Germany / Belgium / Luxembourg / UK / France | 2007 | 103 mins | M18
Desperate times call for desperate measures. When her beloved grandson Olly falls gravely ill, 50 year-old widow Maggie (Marianne Faithfull) finds herself ready to take on a job as a hostess (read: sex worker) to raise the necessary funds to send him to Australia for the needed medical treatment.
Miki (Miki Manojlovic) is the owner of Sexy World, a seedy bar huddled off the streets of Soho. Here, Maggie learns the art of giving first-class handjobs under the pseudonym of “Irina Palm” – male customers insert themselves through a hole in the wall (called the glory hole) and Maggie works from the other side of the wall, preserving, for some time, her anonymity. She soon becomes increasingly successful leading to pay raises and an increased self-esteem – this is the one thing, ironically, that she realises she is good at.
However, concealing her newfound source of income proves to be tricky and when her secret life is exposed, Maggie’s son (Olly’s father) refuses to accept her money. Emotional wrangling and more tragicomedy ensue; Sam Garbarski’s film presents a dramatic social commentary with light-hearted moments and much to chew on when the credits roll. This film was nominated for the Golden Bear for Best Film at the 2007 Berlin International Film Festival.
1000 Years of Good Prayers
Wayne Wang | USA | 2007 | 83 mins | PGMr. Shi (Henry O) plays a dignified and quiet widower living in Beijing. Upon learning that his daughter, Yilan (Faye Yu), is going through a divorce, Mr. Shi decides to travel to Spokane, Washington to visit her with the intention of staying with her and helping her to get over the ‘trauma of divorce’. However, it has been 12 years since they have last met, and Yilan feels his visit is most unwelcome – both in his attempts to rescue her marriage and to reconstruct her life. Feeling resentful of his presence, Yilan finds excuses to leave her father alone in her apartment, only seeing him for dinner when he cooks for her. Thrust out of his daughter’s life, Mr. Shi struggles to take in the strange culture of small-town Spokane. To calm himself, he begins to visit a local park, where he meets Madam (Vida Ghahremani), an older Iranian woman living with her son. Despite their language barrier, both lonely souls communicate with each other and a friendship is forged. Eventually, Mr. Shi’s attempts to communicate with Yilan come to fruition, and both are forced to confront and communicate the deep-buried issues between them. Through this film, Wang paints a vivid picture of the inability to communicate with one’s family members, and the feeling that the closest things can sometimes be the farthest away.
Shadows
Milcho Manchevski | Macedonia / Germany / Italy / Bulgaria / Spain | 2007 | 129 mins | TBA
“Sometimes the dead speak louder than the living”. This rings true for the protagonist, young doctor Lazare Perkov (Borce Nacev), after he survives a near-fatal car accident one rainy night. Following his miraculous escape, he encounters a series of strange people: a man (Salaetin Bilal) with blood seeping from his shoes who is carrying a wailing baby, an old crone speaking a forgotten dialect (Ratka Radmanovic) and a beautiful young woman with a sad secret (Vesna Stanojevska). These tormented souls carry a mysterious message that Lazare must find the meaning to: “Return what’s not yours. Have respect.” That Lazare can see dead people is the catalyst for his awakening from someone who is always trying to live up to the expectations of others to an active protagonist who relishes his feeling of being alive.
This is the long-awaited third feature by director Milcho Manchevski, whose Before the Rain won over 30 awards, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1994. Aided by the mesmerizing cinematography of Fabio Cianchetti, who has worked with Bernardo Bertolucci and Roberto Benigni, Shadows takes us on a hypnotic journey into the heart of our fundamental needs and emotions, with no easy solutions.
Shadows represents Macedonia as its official submission to the Best Foreign Language Film Category of the 80th Annual Academy Awards (2008).
Man From London, The
Béla Tarr | Hungary / Germany / France | 2007 | 135 mins | PG
A creak of metal, a murder, a splash, a suitcase.
In the lush black and white world of our protagonist Maloin, the movie begins. A switchman at a seaside railway station, Maloin leads a simple life at the intersection between land and sea. He mediates comfortably between his disintegrating life and his job until this fateful night, when he is summoned by fate to witness a death.
Shades of gray seep into his life as Maloin struggles with his conscience – he comes face to face with issues of morality, sin, punishment. The line between innocence and complicity in a crime leads him to the ontological question of the meaning and worth of existence.
Based on a crime novel by Belgian writer Georges Simenon, The Man from London is Hungarian film director Béla Tarr’s latest film. The 12-minute long opening take is a masterpiece in itself – it prepares the audience as they get woven into the quagmire of events to come.
Featuring an international cast, including award-winning actress Tilda Swinton, this aesthetically brilliant noir-thriller promises to leave a hauntingly indelible impression on its viewer.
American Zombie
Grace Lee | USA | 2007 | 95 mins | TBA
Documentarian Grace Lee turns her camera on a community in Los Angeles that is getting zombified by a strange virus. In this droll mockumentary, she depicts a slice of the afterlife of this misunderstood subculture.
Grace appears as herself, the naturalistic documentarian. Her handheld camera follows four zombies, who look just like anyone else except for their decaying flesh. Joel, a zombie activist and founder of the Zombie Advocacy Group; Ivan, a convenience store clerk who aspires to be a writer; Judy, a customer-service rep who denies her zombiness to fit into mainstream society; and Lisa, a new-agey florist.
The burning question of the film is: Are there still flesh-eating zombies, even among the nice civilised ones? Or is that just a culturally insensitive myth? (The zombie activist denies it – “Are there flesh-eating humans?” he shoots back.) The film, an over-the-top satire of race relations, pursues this question to the bitter end.
I Just Didn’t Do It
Masayuki Suo | Japan | 2006 | 143 mins | TBA
The director of the original version of Shall We Dance, Masayuki Suo, continues to explore Japanese society’s more overlooked sectors. This time he focuses on Japan’s legal system, as viewed through the story of a man falsely accused of molesting a schoolgirl. The film explores what happens in an authoritarian judicial system when an individual struggles with the unchecked weight of state power.
Teppei Kaneko is a very typical young man, working part-time in Tokyo and trying to decide what he wants to do with his life. He is on his way to his first job interview when he is accused of groping a young schoolgirl on the train. Despite his plea of innocence, the police are only interested in coercing a quick confession and closing the books. Before he knows it, he is plunged into an insane world of Japan’s legal bureaucracy.
Being held in custody is a frustrating, brutalizing and lonely experience for Teppei. The prosecutor ignores his explanations of innocence and he’s summarily arraigned for trail.
In Japan, the promotion of judges depends on the speed with which they deal with their caseloads, resulting in a 99.9% guilty rate. Lacking trial by jury, unlike most modern democracies, presumption of guilt is reality in all but name.
Despite these odds, Teppei is driven by the purity of his belief that innocence will save him and he secures the services of veteran defense counsel, Mr. Arakawa (played by Koji Yakusho) and greenhorn assistant defense attorney, Ms. Sudo. He experiences the frustration and loneliness of being held in custody while his mother and slacker best friend, Tatsu, attempt to organise an alliance to free him. It’s a race between them and the noose of “justice” to gain control of Teppei’s fate.
Histeria
James Lee | Malaysia | 2007 | 90 mins | M18
INTERNATIONAL PREMIERE
Histeria is a horror film about six female students attending a supposedly haunted school. As part of a prank, they pretend to be hysterical and are so convincing that the school calls in a witch doctor to “cure” them. However, they soon find themselves faced with some truly mysterious occurrences and a series of grisly deaths that could either be caused by supernatural forces or by one of the girls themselves. Histeria is the first of the new Malaysian independent films to be shot on 35mm.
Rebel, The
Charlie Nguyen | Vietnam | 2007 | 103 mins | NC16
Set in Vietnam in 1922, when the country was under French colonial rule, The Rebel details the anti-French rebellion by peasants. To retaliate, the French sends Vietnamese secret agents to track and destroy the rebels. One agent is Le Van Cuong. Although marked with a perfect track record, Cuong’s inner conscience is troubled by the sea of Vietnamese blood he has spilled. Following an assassination of a high ranking French official, Cuong is assigned to kill the leader of the resistance. Cuong meets Vo Thanh Thuy, a relentless revolutionary fighter and the daughter of the rebel leader. She is captured and imprisoned by Cuong’s cruel superior, Sy. Cuong suspects that Sy knew about the attack on the French official before it happened, and could have prevented it. Suspicious, he warns Thuy that her organization has a mole, helps to break her out of prison and becomes a fugitive himself. Her fiery patriotism inspires Cuong, and he develops feelings for the young woman as well. Meanwhile, Sy is tracking Cuong and Thuy, knowing the pair will lead him to Thuy’s father.
The Rebel was a big local hit in Vietnam and it also won the Best Audience Choice Award at the Vietnamese International Film Festival (ViFF), 2007. It is also the most expensive Vietnamese film to date. It also played at the 2007 Bangkok International Film Festival, the Austin Film Festival and the Hawaii International Film Festival. The Rebel received the Grand Jury Award at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, 2007.

so disappointed wif the 豆花 last nite at selegie’s rochor beancurd
i asked for hot but it was all pre-packed and onli lukewarm. the most unforgiving part is the beancurd was not as smooth as usual. wat a huge letdown to a loyal customer like myself!
the rochor beancurd at lor 39 is still the best, the hot beancurd is onli scooped out when orders are placed and the beancurd is always served piping hot and wonderfully smooth.
life is too short to be eating bad 豆花!
was watching 话说长江 and this episode was abt shanghai which is apt while the impression of shanghai is still fresh upon my mind.
i duno if the series is abt shanghai coz tis is the first time i watched it
surprisingly, it wasn’t heavy stuff and beli interesting. it explained the history of car making, watch making and the decision behind the restoration of shikumen buildings tat became 新天地 today.
they oso briefly mentioned the maglev and train system. the train system (mrt equivalent) is so much more advanced and comprehensive den sg! they haf a truly integrated system within shanghai for train, buses & even taxis
and the maglev is simply unique in the world. i didn’t get a ride on tis coz i had cabs booked both ways. anyway, the route is still beli short. tink the next time i go, the maglev will haf a longer route
feeling the fatigue creeping up on mi…gonna crash nw
finally caught the show! wanted to watch after seeing the trailer
nice, in a predictable sorta way. but the idea of using feb 29 to illustrate the passing of time & ‘the promise’ of love is cool

the tent was up for a couple of wks till mum complained abt having to get into the tent to clear it
Original equipment manufacturer, or OEM, is a term that refers to containment-based re-branding, namely where one company uses a component of another company within its product, or sells the product of another company under its own brand. OEM refers to the company that originally manufactured the product.

Love Changes Everything
I was only seventeen when she looked at me that way
Seems like yesterday
I was only foolin’ ’round but she stole my heart away
I’ve never been the same
I felt the strangest feeling like a raging fire it burned
She left I cried for weeks and
I can’t forget her or the lesson that I learned
Love changes, changes everything
Love makes you fly it can break your wings
Love changes, changes everything
Love makes the rules from fools to kings
Love changes, love changes everything
Then the years went rollin’ by
I grew up and moved away
Had to earn my pay
Found another lover then
But my heart is sad to say
It only ended up the same way
And I wondered was I destined to spend my life alone
Oh girl you answered my question
This time it’s working you’ve given me new hope
Love changes, changes everything
Love makes you fly it can break your wings
Love changes, changes everything
Love makes the rules from fools to kings
Love changes, love changes everything
I’ve seen the way love shakes ya makes ya break ya
It’s got a power of it’s own
Love changes, changes everything
Love makes you fly it can break your wings
Love changes, changes everything
Love makes the rules from fools to kings
Love changes, love changes everything
my cashcard started beeping & the UI flashed ‘err’ after i went into CBD tdy
i was wondering wat the hell is wrong wif my cashcard

we were watching the news last nite abt mas selamat still being at large
mum started telling YY tat if he sees m.s, he mustn’t act overly excited & let m.s noe he has been spotted
instead he should walk away (not too quick else m.s’ suspicions r aroused!) & call the police when he is sure tat he has got himself far away to safety
tis sounds almost like a joke but when u gif the matter second thots, it’s impt tat kiddos noe how to react if they do spot m.s
the last thing anyone wants to see is kiddos being kidnapped or silenced by a desparate m.s
i was sick of the cover of my notebook and i still haf half a book to go which means tat it’ll last mi at least another yr
i decided to revamp my notebook wif the festive paperbag from crabtree
isn’t my notebook simply beautiful ? nw, i luv looking at my notebook! having pretty things lifts my spirits considerably!
ok, i haf been quite dark & morbid this wk due to everything tat happened
it’s time to move on and children gif us a real insight into 大智慧 by viewing things simply
according to YY, fri was both a sad & happy day
we r sad to see uncle leave but we r happy as he feels no pain at last
and children r the best reminders tat life muz go on.
the kiddos asked for mac on fri nite & i was happy to oblige to take our minds off the sad happenings. the constant attention they demand means tat mum has little time to dwell on her grief which can b a real life saver
YY told mi to stop crying hrs after dad’s passing. the reason as he puts it simply is, u cried a lot oredi…i tink he was trying to say “move on, mum!”
the kiddos were singing CNY songs in the car & fighting & quarrelling as usual while we collected uncle’s ashes and were on our way to holland
i feel tat it’s a good thing for kiddos to b exposed to everything associated wif death so they dun feel tat it’s morbid. my original intent is to educate the kiddos but the tables haf been turned and i tink we should look to the kiddos to learn how to cope well and move on
death need not b morbid. it’s juz part of life cycle and if there’s anything one can b absolutely sure of, it’s their eventual departure from tis world.
we dun do things juz for ppl to see
watever we do, we need to b able to account to ourselves
if u can live wif your conscience & u can eat & sleep on fri nite wifout a hint of guilt, den good for u
