Raising Your Personal Standards

30 01 2008

interesting article!

Stagnation and slacking at work is very common. Few of us are ambitious and self-motivated enough to maintain an optimum level of performance at all times.

However, to develop and mature at our jobs, we need to periodically raise our personal standards. Otherwise, our work will in time begin to feel mundane and our attitude will begin to look sloppy. This in turn affects job satisfaction and career prospects.

Our personal standards are benchmarks we set for ourselves. They’re related to how we treat and perceive ourselves, how we interact with others, the words we use, the attitudes and values we project, and our behavioural patterns. They can be reviewed and changed as we mature as human beings.

Here are some simple tips for raising your personal standards at work or at home:

- Make a list of the people you admire. The traits you have a high regard for could be patience, the ability to persuade others to see their point, being punctual, or kind. So these people could be your peers, your superiors, your subordinates, the mailman or the cleaning lady. Observe them and emulate how they handle tough situations.

- Try to be “unconditionally-constructive” each time you speak while still saying all you need to say. Most people criticise without being able to come up with solutions, or only see the negative in everything. Practice being constructive about as many things as you can and you’ll increase your self-worth and your value as a worker. You’ll also inspire others to be more optimistic and cheerful.

- When mistakes or mishaps occur in your “space” or your sphere of work, learn to accept the responsibility, but not the blame. Deal with the situation and raise your standards so it doesn’t happen again.

- In the corporate world, it seems like a good idea to make results and goals number one on your list of priorities. But ask any successful and influential manager or supervisor, and he or she will tell you that putting people and relationships above results is the key to long term job satisfaction and corporate success.

- What are the things around your office that you tolerate but which continue to drain your energy? It could be an aspect of your work that is time-consuming or menial, but ultimately contributes little or nothing to the quality of your work. Do them, delegate them or discard them if you think they cannot be changed to benefit you or your company.

And those are a few ways you can raise your personal standards and in turn increase your value at work.

Family vacation disasters, and how to avoid them

29 01 2008

all-time best advice for traveling with kids? Skip “quaint.” Now’s the time for condos, motels, and resorts. You want simple, kid-friendly amenities like swimming pools, soundproof walls, a soda machine down the hall, and chicken nuggets on the menu. You want charmless rooms filled with industrial Scotchguarded furniture, nothing breakable, and a TV.

i came across the above piece of advice while reading tis article on parent center….haha, how true!

tat’s y i chose times sq.   comfort and ease is more impt den price

one billion euros!

24 01 2008

saw on yahoo news tat WestLB, a German regional bank would post a net loss of around one billon euros (1.45 billion dollars) owing to fraudulent stock trades and the US subprime market meltdown.

The third largest regional German bank had previously estimated full-year losses at between 100-500 million dollars.

there were press reports about core shareholders injecting two billion euros into WestLB.

reports claim tat WestLB is also to cut 2,000 jobs in Germany and abroad which represents around one-third of the bank’s total workforce.

WestLB has been hit by exposure to the US subprime crisis as well as by dubious stock market trades

What kinda guy will u fall for?

18 01 2008

wow!  sounds yummy

You would fall for a Macho Man
Your man is a true guy with big biceps and six-pack abs to boot. He loves sports, beer, and poker. Your Mr. Perfect lives on adrenaline and is brawny and rough around the edges. Although he may not always notice when you get a new haircut or are wearing special dress, your man loves you as much as he knows how, and tries his best to show you. He is pretty old-fashioned and therefore insists on always paying for you, and he is sure to always make you feel like a lady. Although it may seem like he’d rather watch a football game with his buds than take a moonlit walk with you, inside his rough, hunky exterior is a good heart and a solid partner, and that’s just the way you like him.

Interview question

17 01 2008

You are driving along in your car on a wild, stormy night, it’s raining heavily, when suddenly you pass by a bus stop, and you see three people waiting for a bus:
An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.
An old friend who saved your life once.
The perfect partner you have been dreaming about.

Which one would you choose to offer a ride to, knowing very well that there could only be one passenger in your car?

This is a moral/ethical dilemma that was once actually used as part of a job application.

* You could pick up the old lady, because she is going to die, and thus you should save her first;
* or you could take the old friend because he once saved your life, and this would be the perfect chance to! pay him back.
* However, you may never be able to find your perfect mate again.

The candidate who was hired (out of 200 applicants) had no trouble coming up with his answer. Guess what was his answer?

He simply answered:

“I would give the car keys to my Old friend and let him take the lady to the hospital. I would stay behind and wait for the bus with the partner of my dreams.”

Sometimes, we gain more if we are able to give up our stubborn thought limitations. Never forget to “Think Outside of the Box.”

What will I do – Natalie Burks

17 01 2008

One day you’re sure of the words to say
If only you knew that I felt this way
I wanna give my heart to you
Show me the way that you want me to

I know for sure there’s a place for us
I’m counting the dawns till I feel your touch
You come to me when I dream at night
When I’m with you I would be so wrong

If you could see the love in my eyes
You should know that I’m on your side
Oooh…
I’ll be yours, you’ll be mine
Oooh…
What will I do
(4x)

If you could see the love in my eyes
You should know that I’m on your side
Oooh…
I’ll be yours, you’ll be mine
Oooh…
What will I do

Dreaming Of You

15 01 2008

Late at night when all the world is sleeping
I stay up and think of you
And I wish on a star that somewhere
You are thinking of me too

Cause I’m dreaming of you tonight, till tomorrow
I’ll be holding you tight
And there’s nowhere in the world
I’d rather be than here in my room,
dreaming about you and me
Wonder if you ever see me and
I wonder if you know I’m there
If you look in my eyes would see me
what’s inside Would you even care
As I just wanna hold you close but so far
All I have are dreams of you
So I wait for the day to have the courage to say
How much I love you, yes I do
I’m dreaming of you tonight, till tomorrow

Late at night when all the world is sleeping
I stay up and think of you
Still can’t believe that you came up to me
And said I love you I love you too
Now I’m dreaming with you tonight, till tomorrow
and for all of my life
And there’s nowhere in the world I’d rather be
Than here in my room, dreaming with you endlessly
dreaming

Small change x lots of people = big change

15 01 2008

tat’s the motto from http://www.wearewhatwedo.org and i tink it’s the approach to staying green tat everyone can believe in and follow

when refusing a plastic bag, u r NOT saving a plastic bag for the store.  u r, in fact, saving a plastic bag for yourself and the earth u r on, one lesser plastic bag in ur legacy

ZC and LJ gamely went along wif my shopping bags, taking turns to help carry them and oso refusing plastic bags when we shopped

our efforts paid off, we had so few plastic bags from our days of shopping

bags tat would haf ended up in the bins, often wifout even any chance of being recycled as wif is often the case while travelling

saying no to a plastic bag beats recycling any day

boots

15 01 2008

the wet weather made mi consider wearing boots to KL coz i couldn’t stand the thot of having wet feet

i sure m glad i didn’t coz it’ll b so impossible to try shoes and we tried shoes everywhere and everyday

Secret to happy marriage

15 01 2008

Once upon a time a married couple celebrated their 25th marriage
anniversary. They had become famous in the city for not having a
single conflict in their period of 25 years. Local newspaper editors
had gathered at the occasion to find out the secret of their well
known “happy going marriage”.

Editor: “Sir. It’s amazingly unbelievable. How did you make this
possible?”

Husband recalling his old honeymoon days said:

“We had been to Shimla for honeymoon after marriage. Having selected
the horse riding finally, we both started the ride on different
horses. My horse was pretty okay but the horse on which my wife was
riding seemed to be a crazy one.
On the way ahead, that horse jumped suddenly, making my wife topple
over. Recovering her position from the ground, she patted the horse’s
back and said “This is your first time”. She again climbed the horse
and continued with the ride. After a while, it happened again. This
time she again kept calm and said “This is your second time” and
continued. When the horse dropped her third time, she silently took
out the revolver from the purse and shot the horse dead!!!

I shouted at my wife: “What did you do you psycho. You killed the
poor animal. Are you crazy?”

She gave a silent look and said: “This is your first time!!!”.”

Husband: “That’s it. We are happily married ever after. “

England bans junk food ad

3 01 2008

definitely a move in the rite directions.   while i understand why marketeers target the young (and gullible).  if excessive consumption is not checked and leads to lifelong health problems and malnutrition, someone gotta step in and draw the line.

Junk food ad ban comes into force in Britain

Britain introduced a ban on advertising junk food to under-16s Tuesday, aimed at promoting healthy eating and countering growing child obesity.

The ban, which extends measures already in place for under-10s, will curb television adverts for food and drink products with high fat, salt and sugar content.

Specifically the new measures, agreed last year, will ban adverts for junk food and drink around all programmes of particular appeal to children under 16 years.

According to official data released in October half of all Britons will be obese in 25 years if current trends are not halted; furthermore, 86 percent of men will be overweight in 15 years and 70 percent of women in 20.

Some campaigners say the ban which came into force Monday does not go far enough, calling for a total ban on junk food ads after 9:00 pm.

“We need urgent action to help people, especially children, avoid the less healthy, less happy and, ultimately, shorter life that obesity leads to,” said Richard Watts of the Children’s Food Campaign.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown launched a new 100-million-pound (205-million-dollar, 145-million-euro) programme in October aiming to increase from two to five the number of hours of physical education in schools per week.

Some 2.3 million pounds has already been set aside in the last 10 years to increase the number of hours of sport in school.

Forgiveness

2 01 2008

“To bear a grudge against someone is like burning down your house to get rid of a rat.”

Indeed, not being able to forgive hurts no one more than yourself.

People say or do things often inadvertently and mostly out of personal insecurity or ignorance. You may be just the punching bag for the day. Maybe the other person is envious or afraid of you. Most of the time, these people have their own problems to grapple with.

Don’t let their words and actions wear you down.

They can only have a moment’s effect on you. Then, depending on how you deal with the situation, they can continue to haunt you, or vanish like ashes in the wind. But only you can make that decision. Discouraging and spiteful words and actions from other people can only have the desired effect if you want them to. Give yourself the pleasure of a free spirit.

We often think that forgiveness is something we “give other people”, but forgiveness, really, is a gift to ourselves. When we wreak vengeance on people whom we think have done us an injustice, we invariably end up bitter and resentful. Worse still, if our vindictiveness provokes retaliation, we might start a cycle of vengeance. And when you bear hatred within your heart, what you’re essentially doing is destroying your own state of mind and potential to be happy.

Each day yields opportunities for us to let go of or hold on to grudges, although the severity of each situation may vary. Are you better off holding on to them, or letting go?
Greg Olson wrote that “Forgiveness is a profound power that we all have within ourselves to give. It’s an unselfish act of kindness that allows another human being to begin the process of healing from their self-inflicted wounds.”

Life is too precious to squander on vengeful behaviour or bitter thoughts. Don’t rob yourself of the opportunity to savour life the way it was meant to be savoured.

Give others and yourself the gift of forgiveness.

shopping bags

2 01 2008

well, mi has been dutifully bringing my shopping bags along every time tat i go out

unfortunately, i m not always successful in using my own bags

#1 reason : i forgot!   till the goods r all in the plastic bag, juz happened tonite @ cold storage : (

#2 reason : i didn’t plan ahead.  i haben worked out how to manage a grocery shopping trip worth of goods to b packed into my bags, especially wif the super efficient packing staff at supermkts.   i tried getting the stuff to pack some of the lighter and smaller items into my bags but i was getting into their way big time.  good thing, there was nobody behind mi.  the end result?   mayb one small plastic bag was saved
i was getting huge tins of milk powder and worried my bags won’t hope.   tink i should bring my trolley cart along as well

there ARE success stories too!

i m pleased tat i used both my bags at ikea and didn’t use a single plastic bag (since we did our own packing!)  it was YY hoo packed the stuff and helped to lug them home

the kiddos r catching on reli well and adopting the shopping bag culture wif much enthusiasm while mum & shupin r skeptical.  their defense : if we don’t take any plastic bags, wat do we throw the trash in?

they haf a case.  i m juz trying to cut dwn on the no. of plastic bags taken.   especially the tiny ones tat haf no reuse value as trash bags.  anyway, i tink there r times when we don’t haf a better alternative to taking a plastic bag so i doubt we’ll ever run out of trash bags

i oso rem to whip out my shopping bag in time for my kiddy palace purchases coz i overheard the cashier tell the packer to use double plastic bags before he started packing.
so i managed to use my shopping bag and not take any plastic bag.

i wish tat i will quickly internalise the habit of whipping out my plastic bags in time, every time.   every time i get a plastic bag, it’s like adding a mark on my conscience coz tat’s one more non-biodegradable bag i leave behind on earth

i feel even more guilty tat my consumerism tdy is leaving my kiddos wif a legacy of a more polluted planet tml.   i may not live to see the day earth becomes unfit for inhabitating but my descendants will and tat’s wat worries mi the most

good tau huay, bad tau huay

2 01 2008

we tabao-ed hot selegie tau huay from bedok ic on fri

as expected, the tau huay was hard after a couple of hrs, sigh!

the selegie tau huay is ‘quite’ smooth when eaten hot, except for the upper serangoon branch where it’s beli beli smooth, even better den rochor tau huay

but after it has turned cold, no match at all for rochor beancurd

in line wif my efforts at reducing usage of plastic (bags and everything else), mi is gonna to cut dwn on tabao-ing of rochor beancurd and enjoy it at the shop

mayb i should try bringing back my 101 plastic containers of beancurd to b recycled for my tabao-ing
