the test

28 11 2007

true friends CAN stand the test of time and misunderstandings.

in the first place, true friends would not jump to conclusions and would give each other the benefit of the doubt.

i m disappointed yet again.  i guess there’s some truth in friends VS colleagues after all.

sms

28 11 2007

i dun like sms
the tone of the msg can b mis-interpreted in too many ways

i hate composing sms.  i like to keep it short so tat it doesn’t exceed one msg yet i tink short msgs can come across as being curt

the onli form of sms i like is internet sms since i m typing on a keyboard

so singtel is still the best

我要快乐我要能睡的安稳

27 11 2007

我要快乐我要能睡的安稳

these are another 2 lines tat keep repeating in my mind

27 11 2007

a*mei sang tis during her concert and i luv the song

happened to hear it on radio but sang by a guy (mayb 杨宗纬 ?)

在我心上用力的开一枪
让一切归零在这声巨响

these 2 lines kept repeating in my head and i can’t resist humming them all day

The Almighty Orange, Dissected

18 11 2007

i luv oranges!  i peel them painstakingly using a knife and take xtra care not to cut thru the white fibre.  i usually eat 2 at a go.  according to mum, i used to luv oranges so much when i was little, tat daddy would buy a dozen a time for mi

but i dun take fruits regularly and i’m not a fruit juice fan except for starfruit juice when
i haf sore throats

and of course i luv all things wif apple.  i’m more a cooked apple fan den raw apple.

Orange peel, pulp, or juice: Which one has the most vitamin C?

Orange pulp wins, according to the authors of the book SuperFoods HealthStyle. The pulp has twice as much vitamin C as the peel and 10 times as much as the juice. And here’s what all that nutrition means to your body.

Code Orange: Super Stuff

Oranges are one of nature’s superfoods, according to Steven G. Pratt, MD, and Kathy Matthews, authors of SuperFoods HealthStyle.  Each orange packs over 60 flavonoids, 170 phytochemicals, and a healthy dose of vitamin C.

Good Stuff Keeps You Going

And all that healthy stuff in oranges may help prevent a host of health conditions, including arthritis, asthma, high blood pressure, blood clots, colds, and even cancer. Oranges have got you covered from A to Z.

i much prefer having shoulder massage while seated compared to lying on my

Heed the signs that say you’ve been at the same company for too long.

15 11 2007

wow! i couldn’t resist reading the article when i saw the header

does the order of the questions correspond to the significance of the answers?

i luv the first question. so common sensical yet often the hardest to get an honest answer abt

The original article :

What criteria should be used to determine if you have been with the same company too long?

Your question reminds us of a friend of ours, an investment manager at a highly regarded company in the Midwest, who drove to work one morning, parked his car in the usual spot, and then found he simply could not bring himself to get out of the car. “I guess I stayed on the farm one day too long,” he joked later. When we asked him what went wrong, he answered, “It wasn’t one thing. It was everything.” No wonder he drove home and called in his resignation.

Obviously, most people don’t decide they’ve over-stayed at their companies in such a dramatic fashion. Usually, angst about work creeps in, and then builds until it consumes you. And that can happen early or late in a career. Gone are the days when, after graduation, you took the best available job and stayed for as many years as you could possibly stand, frustration be damned. These days, it is not unusual to hear of perfectly legitimate careers built on multiple job stints.

So, to your question, how can you tell when it’s time to move on? We wouldn’t set out specific criteria as much as offer four questions to help sort out an answer.

The first is so simple it almost goes without saying, but the fact that a lot of people don’t confront it, including our friend who ended up stuck in his car — a Harvard MBA, by the way — suggests we should go ahead and put it out there: Do you want to go to work every morning?

This is not a matter to be over-brained. Does the prospect of going in each day excite you or fill you with dread? Does the work feel interesting and meaningful or are you just going through motions to pull a paycheck? Are you still learning and growing?

We know of a woman who worked in consulting for seven years. She loved her firm and had originally planned a career with it, but suddenly started noticing that she wished every weekend was five days long. “Basically, I felt like we were putting together massive books in order to make recommendations to people who knew more than we did,” she said. “Every day at the office, I felt a little bit more of a hypocrite.” She now happily works on the “front lines,” to use her phrase, in the marketing department of a retail company.

Second, do you enjoy spending time with your co-workers or do they generally bug the living daylights out of you? We’re not saying you should only stay at your company if you want to barbecue with your team every weekend, but if you don’t sincerely enjoy and respect the people you spend 10 hours a day with, you can be sure you will eventually decide to leave your organization. Why not make the break sooner rather than later and start cultivating relationships at a company where you might actually plant roots?

Third, does your company help you fulfill your personal mission? Essentially, this question asks whether your company jibes with your life’s goals and values. Does it require you, for instance, to travel more than you’d like, given your chosen work-life balance? Does it offer enough upward mobility, given your level of ambition? There are no right or wrong answers to such questions, only a sense of whether you are investing your time at the right or wrong company for you.

Fourth and finally, can you picture yourself at your company in a year? We use that time frame because that’s how long it usually takes to find a new, better job once you decide to move on. So peer, as best you can, into the future, and predict where you’ll be in the organization, what work you’ll be doing, whom you will be managing, and who will be managing you. If that scenario strikes you with anything short of excitement, then you’re spinning your wheels. Or put another way, you’re just about to stay too long.

To be clear: We’re not suggesting people quit at the first inkling of discontent. No matter where you work, at some point you will have to endure difficult times, and even a deadly dull assignment, to survive a crisis or move up. But it makes little sense to stay and stay at a company because of inertia. Unlock your door and get out.

Lying On a Nail

14 11 2007

aren’t we all guilty of tis abt certain things in life?

Once there was a young woman who didn’t like her job. Everyday when she came home from work, she told her husband how terrible her day had been, how tiring the work and how unreasonable her boss. “Leave that job,” her husband told her.
“Oh I will,” she said. “But not yet. I have too many friends there for me to leave just yet.” And so she complained until the days became years and her family grew to five. “Leave that job,” her children told her. “Oh I will,” she said. “But not yet.
I have seniority and four weeks vacation I can spend with you. I’m not ready to start over just yet.” And so she remained unhappy at work until the years became decades and her children had children. “Leave that job,” her grandchildren told her. “Oh I will,” she said. “But not yet. There’s only seven more years until I reach thirty years of service and can retire. So I can’t just yet.”
I know this woman. And so do you. And there are scores like her. This reminds me of the story about an old dog half-asleep on the porch of the general store, moaning and groaning in the sun. “Why is your dog acting that way?” a customer asked the store owner. “Oh,” answered the man, “he’s lying on a nail.” “Well, why doesn’t he move?” “Because it’s not hurting him bad enough.”
That’s true for people, too. We convince ourselves the pain is not bad enough to leave the workplace we know. But we’re wrong. Prolonged work pain is damaging. Some damages our self-esteem, kills our passion or destroys our dreams. Some emerges when we compromise our values, quiet our voice or hide our talent. Some happens when we’re seduced by power or believe our own myths of importance and significance. Some occurs when we look the other way, say yes when we mean no or forfeit the promises we made to ourself.
Wilbur Wright, of the Wright brothers fame, once commented, “We could hardly wait to get up in the morning.” I know that exhilarating feeling of being so passionate about something I was working on that I couldn’t wait to get back to work. And people who are winning at working know that kind of passion, too.
They get excited about work. They thrive offering their unique gifts and talents. And when things change as they sometimes will, they refuse to let a soul-depleting boss or environment hijack their self-esteem, passion or dreams. When work becomes work, they stop lying on a nail and do something about it.

Bananas Galore!

14 11 2007

i happened to read tis interesting piece of news abt a container of bananas falling off from a cargo ship near dutch islands

the result : lotsa washed up bananas!

i luv tis quote.  hilarious!

“I think everybody on the island has a bunch now,” said Gossen Buren, a shipping official at the local lighthouse.

and according to the report, lotsa stuff has been washed ashore on the islands including thousands of tennis shoes, aluminum briefcases and children’s toys….wow!

ZY’s blog

11 11 2007

i onli realised tiyan has a ‘new’ blog from mypaper’s site

on good friends

11 11 2007

i made tis observation abt my buddies which i tink is beli interesting

APPEARANCES DO NOT MATTER TO GOOD FRIENDS

1) my super bling necklace from HK has won many raves from colleagues so i noe it’s cool

the first time i wore tis to a wedding, the guys commented i look like ‘Mr T’ (some old wrestler tat i nbr heard of, faint!)  definitely not a compliment lor!

 2) my super stylo new hairstyle – again, i noe it’s nice coz so many colleagues haf commented.  some thot i permed my hair, others thot i set it everyday.  and of course, some ppl noticed my new hair-do from friendster

the gang saw it for the first time and went ‘why ur hair so messy?’  not one word of praise lor!

3) clothes i wear – andy commented my top is thin lor…ya, can see my fats rite…haha

well, not a single comment from the gang

i tink the real reason is being buddies, our friendship has gone beyond being skin deep.

no matter how ugly i look, it doesn’t affect our friendship

similarly, it’s next to impossible to get any praise from the gang coz we see beyond appearances.  so while i find the egs above quite funny, i m oso beli appreciative of my buddies and gang

hols plans

11 11 2007

mi was thrilled by the JS promo but had to wait till the last min before i can make up my mind.  in fact, my stress level goes up whenever i plan hols for family

mi wana to go HK but tix were snapped up.  i could haf got the tix too since i knew as soon as the promo started but i took forever to decide

den dot suggested taipei which sounds cool too but tat’s another super hot destination.

nbr mind, at least i noe when there’s next a promo, to book for these 2 places first!

mi oso realised how diff i m when travelling wif family compared to travelling wif frens

i m beli decisive and easy when travelling wif frens

but wif family, i haf thousand and one worries :

issit the skool hols?
issit TKD grading?
issit a Sun, will YY miss his TKD lesson?
issit the 15th or 1st of the lunar mth?  mum goes vegetarian for the day and needs to pray at home.
issit any major chinese festival?   mi had to take into account ching ming & dumpling festival.
is the place safe?
will they b bored?  wat’s there to do?

was in 2 minds if i should revisit angkor wif family but promo tix onli left if we spend a wk there which i’m worried will b too long a time.  oso, temple visiting is hard work.  on one hand, waiting for QQ to grow up, on the other, mum (and moi!) is getting old

anyway, mi haf made my choice.

since my posting on ribena, i haben been buying them in cartons for the kids.

GlaxoSmithKline pleaded guilty in a New Zealand court in March to 15 charges of  breaching fair trading laws, after two schoolgirls tested its claim that the blackcurrants in Ribena had four times the vitamin C of oranges, but found almost no traces of the vitamin in Ribena. GSK was fined NZ$227,500 ($167,500). The firm said in a statement on Monday that it had launched a television and print campaign in Australia and New Zealand apologising for stating an incorrect vitamin C content.
The firm also says sorry for claiming that blackcurrants contain four times the vitamin C of oranges, because it may have misled consumers into believing Ribena contained four times the level of vitamin C than in the same quantity of orange juice

while grocery shopping recently, YY again asked for Ribena AND he pointed out to me tat Ribena is Rich In Vitamin C Goodness.

Goodness Gracious!  I corrected him immediately tat Ribena is NOT rich in Vit C!  and i reminded him of the schoolgirls who discovered this.

he got as disgusted as mi abt their packaging being as misleading after all these mths tat he put back the cheer pack straightaway

the point here is not tat we r boycotting ribena

the fact is , we do like drinking ribena but as consumers, i need to b able to make an informed solution.  i gif the eg of Coke.  When i drink Coke, i noe it has little nutritional value, is mainly sugar and water but I choose to drink it coz i like it

same rule applies to Ribena, i m not as concerned over Ribena has ANY Vit C at all but i m upset y they still claim to b Rich in Vitamin C Goodness

tis is contrary to wat they list as Ribena facts on the aussie website.  they don’t haf a SG website.

Ribena Vitamin C Claims In “Ready To Drink” Products

In the past, nutritional information panels on some Ribena ready-to-drink products stated an incorrect level of Vitamin C. The testing method used to determine the level of Vitamin C was unreliable and GlaxoSmithKline Australia was unaware of that at the time. The Vitamin C claim has since been removed from the packaging to reflect this.

well, they certainly haben done tat in SG and i intend to complain abt tis

Challenges and the remembered

7 11 2007

Challenges come in three broad categories: easy, difficult and impossible.

Those who take on the easy have a safe and boring life.

Those who take on the difficult have a tough but satisfying life.

Those who take on the impossible are remembered.

brenda sent thru the above and i m reminded of Lim Goh Tong when i read the last part abt taking on and achieving the impossible.

a truly revolutionary idea will always b thot of as being impossible, crazy, insane, unrealistic as it challenges our inner belief system of wat is rational and possible.

and it takes the great to turn impossible into possible

ANYTHING is possible!

toys

7 11 2007

though it’s easy to get excited about the latest developmental toy, many older babies prefer to play with plastic food containers, plastic water bottles, TV remotes, and other “grown-up” stuff.

my first thots on reading the above were how true!

the attention span kiddos haf for the most expensive toys is unfortunately quite short

but they nbr tire of playing wif bottles and pans.  and opening bottle caps trains motor skills.  juz b aware of choking risk.  incidentally, most toys come wif parts tat teach kids to screw and unscrew, fit smaller containers into bigger ones and there’re of course make believe kitchen sets

so it means tat playing wif the real stuff will reap the same educational effects

at one stage, QQ play wif the rice scope so regularly tat we need to ask her for it at dinnertime

Red Devils VS Gunners

7 11 2007

there was a match on sun but i wanted to watch the jacky variety show tat had dicky cheung on the program

so bro had to toggled bet the 2 channels

it’s easy to tell when Man U scores coz i can hear the cheering coming from my neighbourS, not juz one family but a few hor!

too bad gunners equalised in the 90 mins, somemore Man U had an own goal.  i wish Man U picked up the 2 more points

and i luv C Ronaldo!

SISTIC

7 11 2007

had to go sistic to pick up the tix.  i usualli go to 7-11 @ bedok interchange to pick up tix.

to my astonishment last wk, the 7-11 is no more.  it’s been incoorperated into sheng siong when shop N save closed dwn.  nah beh!

i checked the sistic website for other pick up locations.

most ppl will suggest city hall but hey!  got ERP leh!

den mayb tampines, prob is it closes quite earli @ 7pm or 8pm so no guarantee i can make it back to tam by tat time.  somemore need to pay parking, stoopid rite

in the end, i settled for SISTIC itself.

SISTIC stands for Singapore Indoor Stadium TICketing mah.
tis place is so near office, no ERP and opens till from 10am to 10pm.  wat more can i ask for?

YY, TKD and TKD warriors

6 11 2007

i was doing my research on the STF website when i found the news abt the TKD warriors visit in jun

i saw a couple of picts and couldn’t help watching the videos of the warriors breaking planks.  the kids were irresistable and so adorable!  young lives so fragile and so precious.

incidentally, YY first got his inspiration to learn TKD from watching these videos.  he enjoys these clips as much as mi.  in time to come, he’ll haf clips of his own, of him and the sport.

i suddenly thot of how 微妙 the whole thing is, tat mi catching the warriors in action resulted in YY picking up the sport and getting involved wif the STF.
everything seems to b intertwined in some way.  i guess tat’s karma?

i broke the news to QQ tat i can’t bring her for her colouring competition coz it coincides wif the camp.  she wasn’t terribly upset and juz asked if i need to go help out everyday den.

6 11 2007

the problem wif learning hanyu pinyin first

6 11 2007

children r smart, too smart for their own good

while they can read better since they learn hanyu pinyin, they end up doing onli tat

READING HANYU PINYIN !

YY left certain sections blank and when i questioned him, he said it’s becoz he can’t read wifout the hanyu pinyin in those sections

mum & moi were searching for books wifout hanyu pinyin from NLB and it was a daunting task which we failed

becoz of the over reliance on hanyu pinyin, children r taking a much longer time to learn the actual chinese word coz they r distracted and onli paying attention to the pinyin

and tis problem can haf devastating results on their 华语掌握和运用能力 !

in order to use chinese input by pinyin, one needs to know the word one wants coz more often den not, there are multiple phrases wif the same pinyin.  tat’s y so many 错别字!

and being lazi, i dun even choose the words i want from the list provided coz i onli use the keyboard

instead, i use my own 联想 to get the words i want

eg. i wanted to type 倩女幽魂 tdy

of course MS duno tis phrase lah!  so i got 前女 when i type qian nv

i decided to go wif qian 倩 first den nv 女

next i typed you which gave 友 so i tried you jing tat yielded 油井 instead of 幽静

i had to type 幽静的 before i got the you tat i needed

lastly, i typed hun tat gave 昏 so i did hun po 魂魄 instead

it sounds pretty complicated but it works best for mi.  i juz need to delete the words i dun want

preggy 流莺

6 11 2007

marie, dot et moi had the sea coconut from 126 on fri evening

it was pretty rushed as dot was going for her circuit lesson while i had a steamboat dinner date at bro’s place

marie was supposed to wait for DH @ geylang but we advised her against it in case ppl mistook her for preggy 流莺

in the end, she ended up being dumped by moi in front of ubi driving centre

Why You Should Nix Midnight Surfing

6 11 2007

Why You Should Nix Midnight Surfing

Surfing the Web before bed may seem like a relaxing, low-key activity. But it could rob you of something very important (hint: it’s not your identity).

We’re talking about sleep. In a group of people who reported spending up to 2 1/2 hours a night browsing sites on the Internet, over one-third of them also had some kind of problem with their sleep. Here are some better bedtime rituals. (see below ↓)

It appears that high-excitement media inhibits drowsiness (watching late-night TV made sleep time less productive, too, in a recent study). The light your body is exposed to via TV screens and computer monitors seems to mess up your natural sleep/wake cycles and rhythms.

Here are better ways to ease your body into sleep mode.

RealAge Benefit: Getting 6 to 8 hours of sleep per night can make your RealAge as much as 3 years younger.

hanyu pinyin sentence

6 11 2007

tis is wat i mean by the side effects of the current pri skool chinese syllabus

hanyu pinyin sentences r, in my opinion, totally rubbish!

i would rather my son write the wrong word or leave blanks if he doesn’t know how to write the words.  how children can be taught to tink such sentences r acceptable is totally beyond mi!  is the syllabus preparing our kids for chinese input by pinyin??

from YY’s chinese SA
mei mei zai xie zi。
ba ba zai du 书。
ma ma zai xuan yi。
哥哥 zai 画画。
小狗 zai shui jiao。

chinese zodiac signs

1 11 2007

somehow, my discussion wif dot tis afternoon led to a debate over the chinese zodiac signs and the yr of birth

i knew marie is tigress so i assumed 73 is yr of tiger since her bday is in dec

i oso thot sven is cow coz his birthday is before CNY

but dot insisted 73 is yr of ox so leads mi to wonder if marie is actualli ox and not tiger

and i oso realise tat i got it wrong for sven too, he should b rat and not cow den
