Happy New Year!

31 12 2006

i juz got tis new year msg from birthday alarm and i tink it’s so sweet!

i oso happened to b checking out the countdown program on channel 5.

there’s a timer on their website but it read as -1 days, -4 hours, -33 minutes and -19 seconds left until Countdown 2007

as i watched, the seconds kept INCREASING and it went from -32 minutes to -33 minutes when the seconds reached -60 seconds

i m wondering if my mind has shut dwn for the nite coz it doesn’t make sense to mi?

is the timer counting dwn at all? how can the time to the countdwn get longer??

The Curse of the Golden Flower

31 12 2006

in the end, we caught tis show.

was planning to go orchard but luckily i called the telephone booking hotline at 6 and tickets were sold out so we didn’t make a wasted trip.

went to causeway point instead but left wif first row seats for nite at the museum,

the show was better den i thot though i didn’t like the ending. gong li and jay chou were my fav characters.

i was touched by the display of love tat jay had for his mother, gong li which prompted him to participate in the coup though he was loyal to his father.

mi was moved by the amt of heart pain he showed when he saw her forced to take the medication and being poisoned slowly.

the most touching part was when jay had to choose bet having his own life spared or serving her the poisonous concoction everyday and he chose to take his own life.

how can a mother not be touched by tis display of love?

and did the king enjoy true victory? well, the coup failed but he lost his ex-wife, queen and all 3 sons in one nite, even causing local jay to take his own life by forcing him to betray his mother. so, if losing everyone closest to u count as victory, den he won.

gong li is so convincing and plays the role so well.

wif the lavish costume and head gear, it was impt for the actress to carry herself well to command the respect and power befitting a queen and not let the costume ‘wear her’ and overcome her instead.

gong li’s acting was simply excellent. she was very expressive and displayed the many different emotions very well. the fotos dun do her acting justice at all.

zhang ziyi can’t hold a candle to her at all. her acting is very flat and 2 -dimensional. most of the time, she wore the same expression and i can’t depict whether it’s anger or hatred…it all looks the same.

though i dun like chow yuen fatt’s character, his acting was beli convincing too.

A Year In The Life

30 12 2006

I like tis article i got in daily indulgence and exactly wat i had in mind for the long wkend. to take some time out and reflect on the past yr and rejoice over everything accomplished.

I totally dig the part abt ‘Think about what you’ve done as a mother and as an individual’

all too often i hear ppl tok abt wat their family plans on doing and i’ll question wat THEY wana do as an individual. mayb take a trip, learn a skill or something.

beyond all the other roles tat women play, be it mother, daughter, workaholic or good friend, i believe i need to tink abt myself as nuthing else but juz mi and wat i wana do.

it’s about actualli living ur own life and living for urself and not using everyone else as an excuse. the world will not stop orbiting wifout ur ’sacrifice’, for those hoo tink they are living for someone else and being all ‘noble’

12 months.
52 weeks.
365 days.
8,760 hours.
525,600 minutes.
31,536,000 seconds.

There are only a few more days until the end of the year, and we aren’t going to let you get away without a little reflection on days — and minutes and seconds — gone by. It’s time to reflect on 2006.

You’ve probably got several hundred goodnight kisses under your belt, as well as a couple dozen boo-boos to mend and tears to wipe away. You’ve probably overused the same chicken and rice recipe a few weeks straight, and you’ve probably gotten through more than a handful of rough mornings with the help of instant coffee. You might’ve remembered to watch one or two sunsets but — go figure — many more sunrises. You might have spent more than you saved, but you no doubt saved every last picture of your family on your digital camera, which took you roughly a year to learn how to use. You most likely tried to make every moment — and there were many of them — count.

Think about the big things — the family vacation to somewhere other than Disney World, a promotion at work, no more visits to the emergency room — along with the little things — finally having time to finish a book, daily “I love you” exchanges, still being able to help with math homework.

Think about what you’ve done as a mother and as an individual: Count out the amount of Daily Indulgences you actually indulged in and how you’ve begun to reclaim “me” time.
Whatever you reflect on, we’re certain that despite whatever hardships you’ve faced, you are 365 days wiser and a whole year happier. (And if there’s anything you aren’t happy with, well, you’ve got three days to fix it…)

mi got a piece of the lab map for x’mas…keke

tiramisu

30 12 2006

hq mentioned she wanted to make tiramisu…wow! sounds yummy!

i got tis recipe off the web…looks simple enuff for mi even…a muz try

Ingredients
6 Egg yolks
3 tablespoons Sugar
1 pound Mascarpone cheese
1 1/2 cups Strong espresso, cooled
2 teaspoons Dark rum
24 Packaged ladyfingers
1/2 cup Bittersweet chocolate shavings, for garnish

Total Preparation Time: 15 to 30 minutes
Course: Dessert
Actual Cooking Time: 2 hours
Number of Servings: 4
Origin: Italian

Preparation
In a large bowl, using an electric mixer with whisk attachment, beat egg yolks and sugar until thick and pale, about 5 minutes. Add mascarpone cheese and beat until smooth. Add 1 tablespoon of espresso and mix until thoroughly combined.

In a small shallow dish, add remaining espresso and rum. Dip each ladyfinger into espresso for only 5 seconds. Letting the ladyfingers soak too long will cause them to fall apart. Place the soaked ladyfinger on the bottom of a 13 by 9 inch baking dish, breaking them in half if necessary in order to fit the bottom.

Spread evenly 1/2 of the mascarpone mixture over the ladyfingers. Arrange another layer of soaked ladyfingers and top with remaining mascarpone mixture.
Cover tiramisu with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, up to 8 hours.
Before serving, sprinkle with chocolate shavings.

Guess where is it

Water fun at vivocity

29 12 2006

went to vivocity again on x’mas day and the kiddos had some water fun on the 3rd level.

though i haf now been to vivo a few times, each time, i concentrated on a certain area.

tis time round, QQ had a xtra change of clothes so she could play to her heart’s content.

can u spot QQ & YY in the pict? hehe

we had lotsa fun on level 2’s open play area too. i luv the innovative play stations for kiddos coz a lot of the activities help to build their confidence or encourage them to play along wif the other kids. definitely a big draw for mi to revisit.

Bad case of stomachache

29 12 2006

tis happened last mon coz i was telling HQ & siew koon abt it after our belly dancing class.

mum et moi bought so many fresh tomatoes from giant at vivocity and i had craving for spaghetti on mon. so mum made a small pot of tomato paste for my spaghetti using fresh tomatoes and minced meat…totally delicious!!

but i was too greedy and finished the entire pot of tomatoes. in the middle of the nite, i suddenly had a bad case of gastic / stomachache. it was so bad i thot i was going to die. i started imagining thing like mayb i’ll need to go for scope and mayb it’s stomach cancer or Appendicitis.

since all i noe abt Appendicitis is tat the pain is so excruciating tat one will not be able to take it, i decided to brave it out and juz see how bad the pain can get.

it was very very bad but i’m a tough cookie as dr neo puts it. and all tis while, i contemplated if i should wake mum up to apply some ointment for mi poor stomach…ok, i’m spoiled.

the next morning, i was thankful to b still alive though my tummy still felt quite tender. the feeling was like ‘劫后余生”

hangout @ Mt Emily

29 12 2006

marie brought charis et moi to wild rocket at hangout @ Mt Emily.

i luv the deco and ambience. so quaint and cosy!

such a charming boutique hotel!

my onli regret is my choice of main coz i find the flavour of the laksa ‘cai’ in my laksa pesto linguine too strong for my liking. though i muz say the use of the laksa ‘cai’ to bring out the laksa flavour is truly ingenious!

i was at first apprehensive abt ordering tis main as the thot of laksa gravy wif coconut milk is abit too much for mi to take.

charis et marie’s orders of the crabmeat spaghetti are simply brillant choices. i tried some of their noodles and fell in luv wif the tomato sauce. imagine creamy tomato sauce and not the usual tomato base.

i was in two minds abt ordering tis too but i thot i haben got over my terrible stomachache from the other nite.

the funni thing is after visiting upper wilkie rd for the first time in my life, i saw upper wilkie rd in the news tonite too. haha, though for all the wrong reasons.

The Neptune

28 12 2006

juz saw the neptune being featured in tonite’s news on tv

gosh! i didn’t realise tat it’s closing dwn and the whole overseas union house will be demolished in 2 days’ time. though i dun hold much fond memories of the place and haf onli been there on a few occassions, i still tink tat it’s such a pity tat my kiddos haf nbr been to the biggest chinese restaurant in singapore. and it’s famed for its topless performances in the past.

mi decided to try to bring the kiddos there and see it in its last glory.

from its website :

Ever wondered what it is like to be feasting at the biggest Chinese restaurant in Singapore?

Stress levels high

28 12 2006

mi been feeling kinda stressed tdy.

maybe the continuous wet weather has finally got to me, and managed to dampen my spirits.

and the stress level is always high before i go on leave coz i wana make sure i finish as much of my stuff as possible. i hate going on leave wif loose ends.

i was planning on taking leave for YY’s first day of skool. but i was oso contemplating to WFH since i won’t b spending much time in the skool itself. i had some probs wif my VPN the other day tat went unresolved so the possibility of having to re-install my VPN stressed mi further.

thankfully, my ROVA worked juz now….phew! wat a relief!

so many things to complete before my dear YY goes to skool !! tat i decided to put it dwn in a list…actualli it’s more like the 101 other things tat i wana do too tat’s getting mi all flustered. hopefully i can report on my accomplishments over the long wkend and start the yr rite !

things to do over the long wkend
alter school shorts
alter PE shorts
wrap books in plastic cover
label EVERYTHING in YY’s name
organise YY’s wardrobe (managed to clear out QQ’s last wkend…wat an accomplishment!)
organise my wardrobe or at least part of it…it’s a mammoth task, i noe.

but first thing first, tomolo i haf a movie date wif YY. a treat for him before he starts primary skool….eragon or nite at the museum??

Fone switch

24 12 2006

mi decided to switch back to my V3.

though the sony ericsson took better picts, i actualli prefer the handling of the v3. it fits nicely in one hand and can be flipped open easily.

other factors for my switch :

  1. the sony ericsson needed a special cable for pc connection which i find to b a pain, especially when i wana charge my fone in the office coz i dun usually use the travel charger.
  2. the pc connection was not always good and i would get the ‘not connected’ msg. despite reconnecting the fone, i can’t get ard tis.
i do get prob wif the mobile phone tools connection wif v3 too. but i noe tat resetting my fone will ALWAYS resolve it so at least i haf a solution.
  3. the naming conversion of the fotos was making my storage of fotos such a chore.
typical of sony, all fotos start wif DSC and the biggest prob is i haf 2 sony devices tat take picts. all my P8 fotos oso start wif DSC and i get asked if i want to over-write my existing camera fotos when i upload fotos from the T610i…wat a pain!!
i muz say tat i so much prefer motorola’s naming conversion of DD-MM-YY_HHMM is SO MUCH SMARTER!!
wat is the likelihood of u taking 2 fotos at the same min??

of course, the v3 still haf its shortcomings eg. pathetic memory space, poor pict quality but i would rather live wif all tis den use the T610i. mi is actualli in high spirits tdy due to mi switching back to my v3.

and the red edition is so….nice!!

Shopping at Giant

24 12 2006

the tea selection at giant vivocity….mostly twinings but no peppermint…aiyah, was at whitesands ntuc tis afternoon and forgot they carry peppermint…%^&*

i was surprised to see King Rooster brand oil. i vaguely rem tis brand when i was little but i haben noticed them on the shelf for a long time. mayb i juz wasn’t paying enuff attention.

anyway, QQ calls tis 公鸡牌

i was trying to b too smart and told QQ to recognise knife brand and boat brand oil. den i happily pointed to duck brand and asked her if she noes wat brand it is…

her answer : 鸟牌…pengz!

Camphor sachet from BBK

24 12 2006

mi luv tis camphor sachet from BBK.

the smell is quite strong and can b over-powering if u dun like the scent.

but beli effective unlike some car or house fragrance tat dun work beli long.

it’ll get flatter and flatter den the scent is all used up.

i onli managed to find tis in ONE stall in JJ mkt so really muz b fated to b able to buy it. 12 for 100baht…definitely a good buy!

gosh ! 真的是女大十八变

Power Failure!!

22 12 2006

My office was impacted. i didn’t realise the extent of the blackout.

my initial thot was someone had used unauthorised equipment tat could haf caused a power trip on my floor.

when i realised other floors were also impacted, i thot mayb it was a building specific prob…we had no idea wat was going on till i saw tis piece of news at 6pm (after the power had come on, of course)

Thursday December 21, 5:29 PM

Singapore says power restored after brief outage

SINGAPORE, Dec 21 (Reuters) – Singapore’s energy regulator said power supply had been restored across the island following a brief outage late on Thursday in various parts of the city-state.

The power outage was caused by the tripping of two power generating plants at Senoko Power station, which supplies about a third of Singapore’s energy needs.

“Power has been restored at 1640 hours (0840 GMT),” a spokeswoman for the Energy Market Authority told Reuters, adding that both generators were being repaired.

Senoko Power Ltd. was unavailable for comment. Singapore had reported brief blackouts earlier on Thursday afternoon, affecting mostly the northern and north-western parts of the island.

Globetrotting Parents Spend $20,000 for Family Holiday Trips

21 12 2006

true true…i believe in tis saying “读万卷书不如行万里路”. there is nuthing more enriching den immersing in a cultural experience.

kids should b exposed to as many cultures as possible to expand their minds.

fortunately, we stay in asia where travel is affordable and there’s so much to see and do.

December 13, 2006

Today Taylor Donovan, a student from Kailua, Hawaii, will leave for an expedition to Antarctica, the fifth continent he’s visited.

In June, he goes to Asia and by this time next year, when he’s 16, he’ll be in Africa, completing his tour of the world’s seven major land masses.

“You do get a different perspective when you go to other places,’ says Donovan, who first went abroad with his parents at age nine to New Zealand. “If you stay in your hometown, you see the same things everyday. It’s kind of boring.’

Donovan isn’t alone. Children of Americans with household incomes of $150,000 and more are traveling internationally for the first time at a younger age than did their parents, who went abroad at age 19 on average.

Today, about two-thirds of children 17 and under in such families have already been outside the country, according to American Express Co.’s Platinum Luxury Survey of affluent U.S. households released in September.

Families like the Donovans, who are medical industry executives, see school-holiday periods as golden opportunities to explore the world together. This year they are heading to Europe, the Seychelles and offbeat islands of the Caribbean such as Anguilla. The richest rent their own villas and charter yachts, travel experts say.

“We see a real shift of the family wanting to include the kids,’ when going outside the U.S., says Mark Belles, executive vice president of sales at Virtuoso, a travel agents’ network based in Fort Worth, Texas. Families want to enhance their “most precious commodity, which is time spent with the people you love most in your life,’ he says.

`Special Time’

That’s why Annette McEvoy, a 56-year-old vice president at Gap Inc., and her husband are taking their 11- and 19-year-old daughters to St. Barthelemy, part of the French West Indies, on Dec. 25 for five days.

“It’s just being together and having a special time away,’ says McEvoy, a New Yorker who first went abroad at age 19 and took her daughters to the Caribbean as toddlers. “We take them everywhere.’

Dorothy Polash, who didn’t go abroad until her forties, initially took her two daughters on an international trip when they were five and eight years old. This year, she and husband Peter, are taking their teenagers to Brazil.

“The girls are great, great travelers,’ says Dorothy, who lives in Woodside, California, with her husband, a 59-year-old retired software developer. “They love to go everywhere, see it all, eat the food.’

Virtuoso, which oversees North American bookings for Virgin Galactic’s space flights, has seen a “double-digit’ increase in U.S. bookings for international family holiday trips this year, Belles says.

Pattern Change

Travel is among the first three “passions’ of well-off men and women in the U.S., according to the American Express Platinum survey of 1,457 such people. Three-quarters of the adults say they include their children.

In the past two years, there’s been an “amazing change’ in family-travel patterns, with parents and children wanting to go further afield, says San Francisco-based American Express travel agent Maggie Eskicioglu. She planned a two-week trip that began Nov. 25 for a couple with four children aged four to 10.

Their destinations: Paris; Salzburg, Austria; Budapest; and Lucerne, Switzerland.

“It used to be just London and Paris,’ she says, adding that trips often last a month. “Now people are visiting temples in Cambodia, seeing Hanoi, and stopping in Bali. They are looking to build cultural experiences.’

Her two-week European tours for families of four start at $13,000, Eskicioglu says. Most of her clients travel in business class and stay in the best hotels, spending about $20,000, she says.
Pizza in Italy

Parents want their kids to play with children from other cultures, and practice the languages
they are learning in school, says Eskicioglu. “I also get a lot of cooking class requests, like authentic pizza in Italy,’ she says.

To minimize the hassles of traveling with children, the well-to-do take nannies, hire private jets and reserve hotel suites, travel experts say. They also get dedicated on-site concierges.

Fifteen-old Taylor, who is interested in marine biology and studies Japanese, says he found his first trip abroad with his parents to New Zealand “a little scary.’ Now, “I’m kind of pushing them’ to go places, he says.

Other kids feel the same. More than a quarter of 1,000 U.S. teens aged 13 to 18 said they were “passionate’ about travel, according to a September survey by the Harrison Group, a Waterbury, Connecticut based research firm.

`White Continent’

That first trip Donovan took with his parents cost about $21,000. The “White Continent’ voyage they begin today, at more than $35,000, is their most expensive yet. It will take them to Santiago, Chile, then to Ushuaia, Argentina, where they will board the National Geographic Endeavour.

The ship will cross the Drake Passage between Cape Horn and the Antarctic Peninsula. Passengers will kayak through “berg fields,’ hear “Antarctic seltzer’ — gases that escape from dissolving ice — and study penguins and whales.

“We want him to have a lifelong passion for learning,’ says Carol Donovan, 48, an administrator at a Honolulu medical clinic where her husband, Charles, 54, is a medical editor. “Travel is probably one of the purest forms of education.’ “We live from trip to trip,’ says Carol, who traveled abroad for the first time at age 16. “Had I known, I probably would have started Taylor even younger.’

Book It: Story Time

20 12 2006

It’s hard, as adults, to think about life’s luxuries and not get envious of those tooling around in flashy cars, sporting their bling and dropping dollars on five-star dinners and designer duds.

It’s comforting to know that your kids are still at the age when none of that matters — all they care about is you, a good hug and a tattered blanket they’ve had since they came home from the hospital.

This indulgence doesn’t come with a price tag, and it’s a luxury you don’t have to put down a second mortgage to enjoy.

Today, read to your kids.

You won’t get much further with the book on your nightstand, but that can be an indulgence for another day. Plus, we know you love the reaction you get when you read in all those funny voices and when you have your little ones help you pronounce those “big-kid words.”

If that’s not all, the act of reading a good children’s book — classics such as Charlotte’s Web or Where the Red Fern Grows are standards — offers big-time benefits you just don’t get with a Rolex or a pair of diamond studs (which, ugh, depreciate in value the minute you buy them).

  • It improves language and speech development as well as vocabulary and pronunciation.
  • It increases attention span — which, as a result of the MTV generation, is getting shorter and shorter — and it fosters creativity and imaginative thinking.
  • It prepares children for school. For those entering preschool or kindergarten, the act of listening to what someone else is saying will help them in structured situations such as storytelling and focusing on one central person in the classroom.
  • It offers bonding experiences between the parent and child because those moments will be perceived as “our time.”
  • It helps develop a routine for children. If reading is done before bedtime, for instance, it makes for an easier time falling asleep.
  • It promotes a lifelong love of reading. As children who’ve been consistently read to get older, they are more likely to read on their own.

Who needs bling when there are books? Really.

Wet Wet Wet

20 12 2006

the weather has been so, so wet…rained over the wkend and the rain hasn’t stopped since mon afternoon.

the roads r getting flooded !

tis was taken when i was caught in a bad jam turning onto upper changi rd from simei. the trunk is blocking the slip road. accident involving a motorbike

Happiness

19 12 2006

i saw tis and muz post it coz so many ppl complain abt how miserable they are yet do not do anything abt it.

while others r juz so pessimistic whenever they encounter setbacks.

we are resourceful, tat’s y we are fire fighting everyday. if we r rendered helpless by difficulties we face, are we expecting someone else to come along and solve the prob?

i disagree strongly wif not taking ownership of one’s own happiness. nobody else but urself can decide to b happy!

and yes, being happy is a choice and not juz a result of circumstances or sheer luck

Happiness is not something that others can take from me.

It’s something that I would have to throw away on my own.

There will be times when things don’t turn out the way I want them to.
My best friend at work may turn out to be a power-hungry corporate animal who backstabs me at every opportunity.
The promotion I worked so hard for may go to someone else.
My partner might decide to leave me, a day before we are due to go for a vacation together.
I may lose most of my savings in a market crash.

These are things that can happen to the most loving, compassionate, careful and reasonable person.

But after the initial pain and shock, the decision whether or not to let myself languish in despair is entirely up to me.

I can allow misfortune to form the bulk of my life, or I can choose to leave what’s past in the past, and move on.

I can also choose to be an optimal thinker, that is, enhance and elevate my experience of the world in my mind, so that my experience of every day can be a wonderful one.

This involves cultivating a deeper appreciation of things. Even the simplest and most mundane.

French novelist Marcel Proust wrote that “the real voyage of discovery consists of not seeking new landscapes, but having new eyes.”

Yes, we all know a leaf is a leaf is a leaf. We could write a sonnet about a leaf and it would still be just a leaf.

But then our experience of it would be dramatically different. We would see what others cannot. We would savour keenly what others only catch a hint of. We would sense the beauty of life which others have neglected in their constant disregard and contempt.

Even 70-Hour Weeks Are No Sweat For New Breed of ‘Extreme Worker’

17 12 2006

i read tis article and thot of YT…chill ger, chill

December 11, 2006

NEW YORK — Climbing within America’s companies now is a new type of executive, dedicated to the proposition that no amount of work is too much, that there’s always more effort that could — and should — be made by the employee for the sake of the employer, if not in the office then at one’s own computer, copier and fax machine at home.

There’s a name for such world-class workaholics and it was coined by economist Sylvia Ann Hewlett, founding president of the Center for Work-Life Policy, an independent research organization that advises companies.

She calls them “extreme workers.”

And she exposes some of their foibles in an article in the December issue of the Harvard Business Review, titled “Extreme Jobs: The Dangerous Allure of the 70-Hour Workweek.”

Studying a lengthy list of surveys from a pool of two million high-salaried employees in the U.S., she concludes that many of them can easily be labeled “extreme.”

Some signs:
* Long work weeks. Counting commuting time, more than 50% of these extremists put in over 70 hours a week on the job.

* Unending work days. Two-thirds of the people with extreme jobs say that they have to be available to serve clients and deal with their emergencies at any time of the day or night.

* Little time off. Vacations seems to be shrinking. Among the extreme-jobs crowd, 42% take 10 or fewer vacation days per year, far fewer than they are entitled to.

But wait a minute. Don’t the extreme executives themselves think there is something wrong with this picture? Of course, they do.

Hewlett says that more than two-thirds of them believe that they would be physically healthier if they worked less extremely.
58% think that the intensity of their work and the absence of leisure gets in the way of strong relationships with their children;
46% think it gets in the way of good relationships with their spouses and
50% say it makes it impossible to have satisfying sex.

Moreover, the next generations of managers, the so-called Gen X and Gen Y cohorts, seem less enamored of their jobs, and less willing to pay any price for them than do the baby boomers.

Inevitably, they will start to desert their jobs in large numbers and seek other opportunities.

“Half of our extreme workers have one foot out the door,” says Hewlett. “The flight risk [for the younger generation] is high. They are twice as likely to quit as are 45-year-olds.”

She notes also that men and women in extreme jobs see bad things happening to their children, such as the kids eating too much junk food.

The men threaten to quit but don’t. Women threaten to quit and do.
Men don’t blame themselves for the extremists’ problems. Women see it and feel it’s all their fault.
Women feel there is a direct line between the kids’ underachieving in school and the oppressive hours that Mother puts in on the job.

“If we want to hang on to our key female talent,” says Hewlett, “we’ve got to figure out a way of designing high-impact jobs that demand, say, 45 hours a week and not 70 hours a week.”

So far, corporations have not been able to do that.

But some are trying. For example, 34 major companies — including American Express, Lehman Brothers, BP, GE, Johnson & Johnson, Time Warner and others — have joined the Hidden Brain Drain Task Force to figure out ways to reduce the pressures on managers to perform and produce.

Either they will succeed — or they will face rising problems of talent flight and executive burnout.

May I See Your ID?

17 12 2006

i did get asked for my ID when i use my card in US but tat’s abt it. i dun get tat anywhere else tat i go.

as for Visa’s statement, guess it doesn’t apply to Singapore!

instead of card issuers and merchants being responsible for fraudulent charges,
most card issuers in Singapore haf terms & conditions tat make consumers FULLY liable for fraudulent charges when they are victims of card theft.
even CASE turns a blind eye and can advise ppl tat a 50% settlement of the fraudulent charges is a good deal!ey’re victims of card theft.

tis is crazy, surely as a card issuer, fraudulent charges haf been factored in as a cost of business….sigh

Valley stores in Bee survey mostly ask for identification

Shoppers using a credit card for holiday shopping might expect to be asked for identification every time they make a purchase.

But if the total purchase is less than $25, they might not be asked at all.

And while credit card companies prefer that stores check a card’s signature against what’s written on a receipt, most stores don’t appear to do so.

A Modesto Bee audit of more than a dozen Northern San Joaquin Valley stores and restaurants showed that most will ask for identification with a credit card purchase.

The audit was done against the backdrop of the holiday shopping season, when consumers are more vulnerable to identity theft and credit card fraud — crimes law enforcement officials say are mushrooming.

Over two days, a Bee reporter made purchases ranging from $20 to $149 at national chain outlets and locally owned stores, from Ripon to Turlock and Riverbank to Patterson.
Managers at many of the stores said their policy is to check for identification any time a credit card is used.

But there are exceptions. At the Starbucks on Colony Road in Ripon, shift supervisor Katrina Severin said corporate policy is to only check when the customer is buying at least $25 worth of coffee or other products.

“We used to check ID for any amount,” she said, noting the policy changed about a year ago. “I found that customers got irritated when you wanted to see ID for a $2 drink.”

A similar policy was seen at a McDonald’s, where a reporter bought two $10 gift cards without showing identification. There, the reporter swiped the card through a card reader, and the cashier didn’t see the card to compare names or signatures.
‘If they don’t ask, I’ll mention it’

At Gemini Tea Company in Turlock, co-owner Beth Morgan said transactions of less than $25 don’t usually attract attention from the Internal Revenue Service or insurance companies, so retail employees might be less likely to check identification on them.

“It’s also harder when you’re picking up tabs from tables,” she said of her store, which is a tea room and gift shop. “But there’s no excuse for not checking.”

Kristina Baker, a Turlock resident, said the amount of the transaction is less important to her after her friend was an identity theft victim.

“I want to be asked no matter what,” said Baker, 28. “It seems like lately, I’ve been asked more. And if they don’t ask, I’ll mention it.”

Visa and MasterCard said they prefer that stores verify identification by comparing signatures on receipts and the backs of credit cards.

Barbara Coleman, a spokeswoman for MasterCard, said stores shouldn’t accept cards that aren’t signed or ones signed with a notation such as “check ID.”

She said many cardholders put such a message in the signature box on their cards to prompt cashiers to ask for ID, but MasterCard discourages consumers from doing so.

“Any step a merchant is going to take to protect me and my card, I welcome,” Coleman said. “You want to give consumers some peace of mind. But it’s really at the merchant’s discretion.”
She said that transactions for smaller amounts might not be checked because someone who has stolen a card will probably use it for big purchases.

“You have to think in terms of where fraud will take place,” she said. “There are not going to be a lot of people stealing a card to go buy a cheeseburger.”

However, the card companies’ preferred signature verification method wasn’t used at all during The Bee’s check of businesses. That was true for purchases big and small, including an $84 iPod Shuffle bought at Wal-Mart in Turlock.

There, the cashier didn’t ask for ID and didn’t see the card, which was swiped through a card reader.

Wal-Mart corporate officials said the store relies on technol-ogy to catch lost or stolen cards, but does not have a strict policy on checking identification.

At Hart Floral in Modesto, a co-owner said his employees should check signatures on credit card receipts.

“Do we do it? Probably not as much as we should,” said Chris Downing. The store asks for picture identification on all orders, he said, and verifies addresses for phone orders.
“It’s habitual now,” he said of asking for ID. “Our walk-in customers usually don’t have any problem providing that.”

If stores don’t ask for proof, there’s no law that stipulates otherwise, said Melanie Bedwell, a California Department of Consumer Affairs spokeswoman.
“I would give businesses the grace of setting up their own internal policies,” Bedwell said.
She added that state law bars stores from making a purchase contingent on showing identification, though they can refuse a card if it seems suspicious.
But stores that request ID are using good practices, Bedwell said. “It’s becoming so much a part of a regular process.”

Card companies offer protection. And Visa said consumers shouldn’t worry that a thief could easily use their credit card information because stores might not check signatures or identification.
For every $100 Visa cardholders spend, only six cents is spent fraudulently, according to the company.
If a card is lost or stolen, any purchases a thief makes are more likely to be the responsibility of the merchant or the issuing credit card company than the cardholder, according to Visa.

Lee Ramirez of Turlock said that he counts on his credit card company, American Express, more than he does the stores.
“With my credit card, when it’s not a legitimate charge, I can call and tell them to reverse it, and they do,” he said. “I don’t care one way or another if the stores check.”

Playing A Violin With Three Strings

16 12 2006

On Nov. 18, 1995, Itzhak Perlman, the violinist, came on stage to give a concert at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City.

Perlman was stricken with polio as a child, and so he has braces on both legs and walks with the aid of two crutches. He walked painfully, yet majestically, until he reached his chair.

Then he sat down, slowly, put his crutches on the floor, undid the clasps on his legs, tucked one foot back and extended the other foot forward.

Then he bent down and picked up the violin, put it under his chin, nodded to the conductor and proceeded to play.

But just as he finished the first few bars, one of the strings on his violin broke.

You could hear it snap – it went off like gunfire across the room.

Many in the audience figured that he would have to get up and limp his way off stage to find another violin or gesture to someone to bring him another one.

But he didn’t.

Instead, he waited a moment, closed his eyes and then signaled the conductor to begin again.

The orchestra began, and he played from where he had left off.
And he played with such passion and such power and such purity as the audience had never heard before.

You could see him modulating, changing, re-composing the piece in his head. At one point, it sounded like he was de-tuning the strings to get new sounds from them that they had never made before.

When he finished, there was an awesome silence in the room.

And then people rose and cheered.

There was an extraordinary outburst of applause from every corner of the auditorium. The crowd was on its feet, screaming and cheering, doing everything they could to show how much they appreciated what he had done. P

erlman smiled, wiped the sweat from this brow, raised his bow to quiet the audience, and then he said – not boastfully, but in a quiet, pensive, reverent tone – “You know, sometimes it is the artist’s task to find out how much music you can still make with what you have left.”

James Kim 1971-2006

9 12 2006

i haf been following the news on the family who got lost in the US.

I just saw the news tat the father James Kim has been found dead. Tis is so sad coz the mum and 2 daughters were juz rescued on Mon after being stranded for more than a week in Oregon’s snowy coastal mountains.

Their story is heart-breaking. One can only imagine the desperation they faced while pending rescue and supplies were running out. He had set out on foot in a last attempt to save his family and it’s even more irony tat he died so close to help.

While his death is mourned, I am reminded of how often I end up taking wrong turns and going the wrong way myself. Yet, tis time, the mistake has turned into a fatal one for the Kim family. My heart goes out to them and I fully understand the pain of losing a wonderful dad who cares so much for the family to his last breath and act.

When family is concerned, one cannot do too much to plan for the worst possible scenario.

This is the website for the family.

James Kim, Senior Editor at CNET, was a respected expert on cutting-edge digital devices, an owner of a trendy clothing store and a lover of the futuristic-sounding music known as electronica.

FARES EFFECTIVE FROM 1 OCTOBER 2006

5 12 2006

i hardly take public transport since i started driving.

when i do take the occasional bus, i dun usually pay attention to the amt deducted since Ez-link is so convenient and i trust transitlink to haf tested the system thoroughly.

anyway, since i m car-less tis wk and being a sucker for bus rides, i decided to take a bus home last nite.

being boliao, i counted the no. of stops needed to get home. 44 stops in total, not tat bad, i guess. the ride took barely over an hr.

i oso noted the bus fare displayed at the bus-stop. $1.08, not tat exp.

since i haf noted the bus fare, i causally checked the deduction made at my stop $1.38!! WHY THE 30 CENTS DIFFERENCE!

I verified tis from the Transitlink website and realised tat the amount deducted is correct. the new fare effective 1 Oct 06 is $1.38.

the fare didn’t jump from $1.08 to $1.38 at one shot but still tat’s a 27% increase!

i wonder when was the fare stated at bus-stops last updated.

given tat most ppl would need to take min 2 bus rides a day ( to & from work, barring transfers), tat’s a huge huge hike in fares! we need to look at the big picture in totality and not juz treat each 10cents increase as a small increment.

unfortunate ppl like mi dun live near enuff any MRT stations to walk there so if i take bus->MRT–>bus to work, doesn’t tat work out to be at least 30 cents more each time the fare is adjusted??
60 cents both ways is horrific, by the sound of it.

i wonder if the fare increase done annually is offset by rebates from transfers or juz charged upfront for each leg of the journey.

can someone wif better maths enlighten mi on tis?

haf the tax rebates, govt bonuses and other subsidizes increased by 27% too to match this increase, i wonder?

mayb the govt haben thot of tis. guess i should post tis question to my MP since i’m sure he’s terribly concerned abt the livelihood and well-being of everyone in his ward and is working towards for the better good of everyone in SG.
otherwise, y bother to stand for elections, rite?

and now tat i haf tis piece of ‘evidence’ of inflation or higher cost of living, i muz make sure tat my boss matches the 27% increase at the minimum, or i can’t even afford to take public transport to work liao.

or mayb we should all idolise lance armstrong and start pedalling. will save u millions in the long run.

Gingerbread men!!

Wake Up and Smell the Peppermint

4 12 2006

i totally agree wif tis report! as i always say, my peppermint is such a ‘perk mi up’ for mi. works wonders. juz a whiff of it and i’m instantly revived and alert.

can’t wait for my next JB trip to stock up on my peppermint tea!

Feel like you’re in a food coma after a week of Thanksgiving leftovers? Get a whiff of this.

The scent of peppermint is like a drill sergeant, telling your brain to “Wake up and focus!”

New research shows that you pay better attention to dull-but-must-do jobs when this scent is around.

So the next time you’re mentally sluggish, grab a candy cane, chew a stick of peppermint gum, or inhale the scent of mint-infused oil, and then listen to your brain say, “Can do!”

Science has confirmed it: When there’s a hint of mint wafting through the room, workers perform better on jobs that demand accuracy.

In a study, participants made fewer typing mistakes and alphabetized things faster when under the influence of peppermint’s aroma compared to tasks performed in a scent-free zone.

Using a scent for therapeutic purposes — whether to boost your attention to detail, soothe your psyche, or help you lose weight — is what aromatherapy’s all about.

It typically involves either inhaling the fragrance of scent-infused oils or applying diluted versions to the skin.

The premise? Some scents stimulate brain activity that produces biological responses such as relaxation or mental clarity.

Until recently, evidence supporting aromatherapy has been largely anecdotal. But more and more research now suggests that aromatherapy may have real psychological and medical benefits.

Running on Empty

4 12 2006

I am prone to giddy spells coz of my low blood (and iron deficiency).

drinking more den 2 cups of green tea in the afternoon can bring on giddy spells too. I quickly counteract the effects wif a cup of chrysanthemum on fri coz i thot the sugar should help and it worked.

i haf kicked the long time habit of having bfast. sometimes, i don’t even feel hungry in the morning. den the giddy spell hits mi or my stomach starts growling at 11 plus, like tdy.
so i make myself a thick cup of milo to 充饥 while waiting for lunch.

whenever i go abt for hrs wifout any food after getting up, the thot tat i’m ‘running on empty’ keeps repeating in my mind. i wonder if i will collapse suddenly from hunger…haha…tat thot is pretty scary. tink i’ll put having bfast on my 2007 list of resolutions.

and my calcium level isn’t optimum according to the recent test i did in the office. though i like milk, i juz don’t haf the habit of drinking milk regularly.

i juz threw away an expired carton of HL milk which i bought for YY last week. see! i didn’t even tink of drinking the milk though it’s in the fridge for a wk. definitely gotta change.

mi will get more & more long-winded as i rattle on abt wat i wana change/do in 2007 as well as reflect on wat was accomplished in 2006 ( which is a lot, a lot, a lot too! )

juz 2 wks back, i started using the notebook from my company’s Women’s Interest Network. i stuck my 窑窕淑女 postcard on the cover and i m pleased wif it.

each day, i would write the julian date, day of the wk as well as actual date in YYYYMMDD
my first entry looks like this :
324/365 Mon 20061120

tis system reminds mi of organisers whereby the julian date is shown as well as the no. of days left in the yr.

today reads 338/365, onli 27 days left in 2006.
wat better time to rejoice on wat has been completed in 2006 and start planning for 2007.
i m lucky! to haf the privilege of planning days, wks, mths and yrs ahead. there are others ard us who do not haf tis privilege. they live by secs, mins, hrs, days at a time. finding time to do good for others will continue to b on my list of ‘to dos’

Skirts

Skirts are back wif a vengence!

after nearly a yr of swearing off skirts for pants, i haf decided to retract my fashion statement and start wearing skirts again.

my goal for tis week is to tidy up my clothes and do watever is necessary for a functional wardrobe, eg. ironing and alterations.

i finally got ard to ‘refurnbishing’ the bag tat marie got mi from shanghai last x’mas. the handle was peeling off badly but i like the bag so much tat i bought some cordoury ribbon and wrapped the handles.

now i tink it looks and feels great!

bro happened to b packing for reservist and polishing his shoes so i cleared out my shoes too.

the kiwi instant shine in sponge application really works wonders! and it’s so easy to use.

Clearing Mental Clutter

3 12 2006

omg, y does it sound juz like mi? before reading tis article, i was oredi using tis term ‘clearing the clutter’ in my life whether it’s mental or physical spring-cleaning.

well, outlets of my mental clutter includes tis blog, 43 things, my pda and recently, i started using a notebook

and i haf always had the habit of talking my thots aloud. as i type long emails, i m often mumbling under my breath coz it helps mi phase my thots clearly plus ensure grammer is correct. tat has been how i did my grammer exercises since pri skool. if something doesn’t sound right (literally), den the grammer is properly wrong.

looks like tat’s one more reason for mi to exercise

Until the mid-80s, it was believed that ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder was outgrown by the time the child hit adolescence.

But we now know that many children go on to carry the condition into adulthood and for some, pretty much their whole lives.

In fact, all adults suffer from some degree of ADHD, whose symptoms include distractibility, impulsivity, inattention, difficulty staying focused on tasks, having many projects going on at one time and rarely completing any of them, irritability, difficulty falling asleep and difficulty waking up.

These symptoms, in minor manifestations may not impair your ability to lead a normal life, but they can definitely reduce your quality of life.

Many adults who display minor indications of ADHD do not realize they are suffering from mild ADHD and do not seek treatment or do anything to rectify the problem.

So if you believe you may be suffering from mild ADHD or the symptoms of ADHD, do seek professional prognosis.

Even if you don’t suffer from the condition as medically-defined, you might still display some of the symptoms which may affect your ability to lead a happy and successful life.

One of the consequences of ADHD symptoms is the accumulation of useless information in your brain. If you find difficulty staying focused and are distracted easily, this means your brain probably stores a lot of information that doesn’t get cleared.

Mental clutter needs to be cleared, and here are some ways you can do this. Now a great way to unclog the passageways of your mind is to transfer your mental thoughts onto something tangible, like paper, or for most of us these days, a computer screen.

Journaling or the penning of your feelings is a good subject, but it could also be a To-Do List, or a letter to someone whom you feel you can confide in about something.
Once your thoughts are put out in tactile form, the brain can finally let go of them.

Many people with ADHD are “verbal processors.” This means that they often work through thoughts and feelings by talking about them. So if you think you might be suffering from some symptoms of ADHD, don’t keep quiet! Babble about it!

Getting a friend or objective person to listen to you is great, but it’s the act of talking that helps, so talking to yourself, talking to your plant, or your pet works too!

Mental clutter can also often be cleared by physical movement or exercise. Fitness fans who claim to achieve mental clarity by jogging or doing yoga and so on are not lying one bit. An inactive body often encourages the mind to brood and wander, but a moving body frees up the mind to let go of unnecessary or constricting thoughts.

The Scholar and the Boatman

3 12 2006

Once upon a time, there lived a scholar who had mastered many languages, the ancient scriptures, including the Vedas, arguably the oldest surviving texts in the world, epic literary works and so on.

He was unparalleled among his peers and he was very proud of himself. One day, he wanted to cross a river and hired a boatman.

Sneering silently at the boatman’s lowly profession, the scholar asked him, “Have you ever studied the Vedas?”
The boatman said matter-of-factly, “No, I am not educated and I cannot read or write”.
Pouncing on this response, the scholar snickered, “Oh, you have wasted one-fourth of your life time by not knowing the Vedas!”

Not content to end it there, the scholar continued, “What about the great epics then? Have you ever listened to them?”
The boatman replied, “I have no time to read the epics as I leave for work very early in the morning to ferry people across the river and return home very late”.
To this the scholar said, “Oh, you have wasted half of your life time by not listening to the great epics!”

The scholar continued, “Have you at least known languages other than your mother tongue?”
To which the boatman said he never travelled outside his native land and hence, had no opportunity to learn other languages.

The scholar said, “Oh, then you have wasted three-fourths of your life time”. By this time, the boat had covered half the distance and it was in the middle of the river.

The boatman noticed that water was entering through a small hole in the boat.
He asked the scholar, “Oh, respected scholar! Do you know swimming?”
The scholar replied, “I have no time to waste in learning swimming. I can just pay a small charge and cross the river at any time.”

The boatman said, “Oh respected scholar! By not knowing swimming, you have wasted your whole life time. The boat is going to sink very soon. I’m exhausted from rowing and only have the strength to swim to the bank myself?”

The Light That’s Given Away

3 12 2006

Once upon a time a man had heard, that in a foreign place, far away, there was a holy flame burning.

So he got up and left his home to find the holy flame and bring some of its light back home to his house.

He thought: ‘When I have this light, then I will have happiness and life and all the people I love will have it too.’

He travelled far, far away and finally found the holy flame, with which he lit his light. On his way back he had only one worry: ‘That his light could go out.’

On his way home he met someone who was freezing and didn’t have any fire and who begged him to give him some of his fire.

The man with the light hesitated for a moment. Wasn’t his light too precious, too holy to be given away for something ordinary like that?

Despite these doubts, he decided to give some of his light to the one who was freezing in the darkness.

The man continued his journey home and when he had almost reached his house a terrible thunderstorm started. He tried to protect his light from the rain and the storm, but in the end his light went out.

To travel the long way back to the place where the holy flame was burning was impossible; he wouldn’t have enough strength to go back that far – but he was strong enough to return to the human being whom he had helped on his way home. ………and with his light he could light his own again.

———————————————————————————————-
