Comment: Even Better Than Stoozing

29 09 2006

stoozing is an interesting term but the concept’s fairly simple.
but in sg, guess ppl prefers the freebies tat come wif the cards and the idea is to cancel the cards upon renewal….hehe

and i saw the posting abt dbs sending pre-approved ‘cards’ to alan….gosh!
i’ll b pretty preeved if i get a card i didn’t apply for.

September 26, 2006

‘Stoozing’ is a damn curious word. It’s when you get a 0% on balance transfers credit card and transfer the balance to a bank account that pays a high interest. Before the introductory 0% period expires, you pay off the credit card, leaving you with the interest you’ve earned. Thus, you get free money.

Problem is, stoozing is getting harder to do.
To start with, few cards let you credit bank accounts directly. Secondly, most credit cards now charge a fee of 2-3% to transfer a balance, which means if you’re not careful you may actually make a loss! There are a few cards left that don’t charge a fee, but none of them have 0% deals lasting more than 6 months, which means you’d have to switch cards frequently, which is easier said than done.

So stoozers are getting less and less for more and more effort, and many have decided it’s no longer worth it.
If you find this is happening to you, don’t despair! You’ve earned your spurs, so why not hang them up and take the stoozing retirement option, namely cashback credit cards?

With most such cards, you usually receive cashback at the end of the calendar year, or once a year on the anniversary of the card. There are lots of very similar cashback cards offering 0.5% to 1% on all purchases, but the best cashback card at the moment is…Oh, I wish it was that simple! The thing is, it depends on how you spend. Even so, I reckon there are three that stand out.

GE Money claims that its computers can track purchases in any shop and work out if it’s a food or petrol purchase, which is why it can pay an astounding 3% on them. It pays 0.5% on all other purchases. Not surprisingly then, this is my favourite cashback card, because food and petrol can add up to be some of our greatest bills, as I’m sure you’re very aware!

But consider your other expenses as well. If you buy a lot of music, or electronic stuff, or if you spend a lot on holidays, you could do better with one of the other two cards: the Morgan Stanley Platinum Mastercard and the American Express Platinum Credit Card.

The ultimate post-stoozing technique would be to get a combination of these cards if you can. Use the GE Money card for food and petrol, then one of the other cards for your remaining purchases. The Morgan Stanley Platinum Mastercard will be best for most people, but, if you spend close to, or more than, £10,000 on your credit card each year, you’d do better to get the American Express Platinum Credit Card instead.

There are two other things to bear in mind. One: you’ll need a great credit record to get these cards, so go for something less ambitious if you don’t think you qualify. Two: as always, remember to use your cards for one purpose, e.g. don’t use a card for both purchases and balance transfers. If you do, the small print could cost you a fortune!

Update: since writing this article, very Foolish reader Adam Norman told me that GE Money has withdrawn the Everyday card, apparently because there was so little take-up, which I find hard to believe! I spoke with GE Money, who could only tell me that it ‘may’ have been withdrawn(!), despite the fact you can still apply for it through this link: http://www.gemoney.co.uk/html/creditcard/everyday_creditcardproductpage.shtml.
If you’re interested in it, I still say give it a go!

Our life

28 09 2006

i’ve seen tis before and like the analogies used so here it is :

On the very first day of the world, God created the cow.
He said to the cow:”Ah Gu (cow), today I have created you!
Your job is to go to the field with the farmer all day long.
You will provide the energy to pull things!
You will also provide milk for people to drink!
You are to work all day under the sun! In return, you will only eatgrass.
For that, you will have a life span of 50 years.”

Ah Gu objected.”What.. I work all day in the sun and I get only to eat grass! On top of that, I have to give my milk away! This is tough and you want me to live 50 years!I’ll take 20 and you can have the remaining 30 years back!” God agreed..

On the next day, God created the dog.
He said to the dog.”Ah Kow (dog), I have created you for a purpose.
You are to sit all day by the door of your master’s house!
Should anyone come in, you are to bark at them!I
n return, you will eat your master’s leftovers. I’ll give you a life span of 20 years.”

Ah Kow objected. ” What! I have to sit by the door all day and will needto bark at people, and what do I get … LEFTOVERS…This isn’t right, I’ll take 10 and you can have the remaining 10 years back!” God agreed again.

On the third day, God created the monkey.
He said to the monkey.”Lao Kao (monkey), your job is to entertain people.
You will make them laugh, act stupid and make faces!
You will also do somersaults and swing on trees to amaze them.
In return, you will get to eat bananas and peanuts.
For that, I’ll give you 20 years to live.”

Naturally the monkey objected.”This is ridiculous; I gotta make faces and make people laugh? Let’s not even come to the part about the trees and somersaults.Tell you what, I’ll give 10 years of my life to thank you for my existence and I’ll take 10.What do you think?” God agreed again.

On the forth day, God created humans.
God said to the man.”You are my best piece of work, for that, you will only need to sleep, eat, sleep, play, eat, sleep again and do nothing else.
You will get to eat all the best things and play with the best toys. All you need to do is enjoy all your life.
For this kinda of life, I’ll give you 20 years.”

Just like the rest, the man objected.”What, all I need to do is relax and enjoy myself and I have only 20 years to live? Tell you what, you’ve 30 years back from Ah Gu, 10 years from Ah Kowand another 10 from Lao Kao and you probably don’t know what to do with all those lifes. Why not I take them all and I’ll have 70 years to live?”
God being good natured, agreed with a smile…..

AND THAT IS WHY…..
We eat, sleep, play and enjoy for the first 20 years of our lives when we are growing up.
Work like a cow for the next 30 to raise our family.
Sit outside the door and wait for our children to come home for the next10 when we are retired.
And finally, we make faces and perform monkey tricks to entertain our grandchildren for the final 10 years.

GET IT ?????

Have a good laugh… and that makes you younger for another 10 years….

The Billionaires’ Club

22 09 2006

A nine-figure fortune won’t get you much mention these days, at least not in these pages. This year, for the first time, everyone on The Forbes 400 has at least $1 billion.
The collective net worth of the nation’s wealthiest climbed $120 billion, to $1.25 trillion.

Surging real estate, oil and other asset prices paved the way for 28 new members. Developer John P. Manning used political savvy to build a $1.1 billion fortune, in part by brokering low-income housing projects.

Chesapeake Energy founders Aubrey McClendon and Tom L. Ward are two of the oil fortunes added to the list. Pouring 40 million caffeinated drinks a week landed Starbucks honcho Howard Schultz on our list of America’s 400 richest.

Manny Mashouf placed his skimpy women’s wear on TV shows like “Party of Five” and “Ally McBeal;” today he has a $1.5 billion fortune in Bebe clothing stores.

Also gracing our list for the first time are Lehman Brothers chief Richard Fuld ($1 billion), hedge fund manager David E. Shaw ($1 billion), mutual fund guru Jonathan Lovelace Jr. ($1.1 billion), Houston Rockets owner Leslie Alexander ($1.2 billion), leveraged buyout tycoon Leon Black ($2 billion), Google veteran Omid Kordestani ($1.9 billion), Colony Capital’s Thomas Barrack ($1 billion), New York City real estate moguls Stephen Ross ($2.5 billion) and Tamir Sapir ($2 billion), and the husband-and-wife computer chip team of Weili Dai ($1 billion) and Sehat Sutardja ($1 billion).

Black Entertainment Television founder Robert Johnson, who rebuilt his fortune with investments in real estate and restaurants, is among the 14 returnees to this year’s list. Netscape pioneer James Clark is another retread; he reinvested his tech proceeds into Miami condos and construction outfit Hyperion Development Group following the burst of the tech bubble six years ago.

Also returning is Little Caesar’s founder Michael Ilitch ($1.5 billion), car dealership owner Robert Friedkin ($1.2 billion), investors J. Christopher Flowers ($1.2 billion) and Alfred P. West ($1.2 billion), and banking and real estate maven Paul M. Milstein ($3.5 billion).

Once again the biggest gainer is casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, with a net worth up $9 billion. Adelson’s Las Vegas Sands stock is up 125 percent since its public offering in December 2004. He has made almost $1 million an hour since the 2004 Forbes 400 was published.

Another big gainer is Warren Buffett, who added $6 billion. That wealth, and the rest of what he has accumulated as a value investor, will be given away, mostly to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Eight members of last year’s list have died, including investor Preston Tisch, Grey Goose vodka creator Sidney Frank, and James and Margaret Cargill, two cousins who inherited a stake in the world’s largest commodities company from William W. Cargill.

Thirty-four people couldn’t keep up, or gave their money away. They include leveraged buyout tycoon Theodore Forstmann, poultry man Donald Tyson, real estate investors John Arrillaga and Richard Peery, and fashionista Richard Hayne. Husband-and-wife banking team Herbert and Marion Sandler dropped from our rankings after giving away more than $1 billion combined to charity.

Thailand

21 09 2006

after karen alerted mi abt the coup in thailand, can’t help sharing her sentiments tat the world is a messy place to live in now.

email i got tat i found hilarious, describes the world situation in a nutshell

aiyo the whole political situation is very bad.. in the world taiwan got prb, Thailand like this.. m’sia got abit of religious unrest due to wat the pope has said den HatYai get bombed…in Bali – Australian not happy wif Indonesian Govt for metting out punishment to drug traffickers…

den Spore – worse got IMF, open target & of cos not forget the Chee Soon Juan who roams hong lim and dun wan to bathe….

but the apparent calm in BKK impresses mi.
but mayb there is no need to b surprised since the Thai has always been a gentle and polite people.

perhaps tis situation is not all bad afterall. and BKK remains the #1 shopping, wkend getaway spot in our hearts.

Pluto = dwarf planet

20 09 2006

i suddenli realised tat i forgot to mention anything abt Pluto since i heard the news abt its reclassification to dwarf planet.

From its discovery by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930, Pluto was considered the ninth planet from the Sun.

In the late 20th and early 21st century, many similar objects were discovered in the outer solar system, most notably the trans-Neptunian object Eris which is slightly larger than Pluto.
i tink tis is the 10th planet tat ZY was trying to explain.

In August of 2006 the International Astronomical Union (IAU) redefined the term “planet”, and classified Pluto, the asteroid Ceres, and Eris as dwarf planets.

Pluto’s name is the Roman equivalent of Hades.
In the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages, the name was translated as death king star (冥王星).
In Vietnamese it is named after Yama (閻王星), the Guardian of Hell in Buddhism mythology.

Pluto’s official status as a planet has been a constant subject of controversy, fueled by the past lack of a clear definition of planet, since at least as early as 1992, when the first Kuiper Belt Object, 1992 QB1, was discovered. Since then, further discoveries intensified the debate in the 21st century.

IAU Decision
Main article: 2006 redefinition of planet

There are three main conditions for an object to be called a ‘planet’, according to the IAU resolution passed August 24, 2006.

  1. The object must be in orbit around the Sun.
  2. The object must be massive enough to be a sphere by its own gravitational force. More specifically, its own gravity should pull it into a shape of hydrostatic equilibrium.
  3. It must have cleared the neighborhood around its orbit.

Pluto fails to meet the third condition.
The IAU further resolved that Pluto be classified in the simultaneously created dwarf planet category, and that it act as prototype for a yet-to-be-named category of trans-Neptunian objects, in which it would be separately, but concurrently, classified.

Prior to this decision several other definitions had been proposed, some of which might have ruled out planetary status for Earth or Mercury or may have classified several of the asteroids as planets. This version was democratically chosen in a successful attempt at avoiding these non-traditional results.

——————————————————————————————–

of course tis posting will be incomplete wifout any info on the solar system.

In broad terms, the charted regions of the Solar System consist of the Sun, four rocky bodies close to it called the terrestrial planets, an inner belt of rocky asteroids, four gas giant planets, and an outer belt of small, icy bodies known as the Kuiper belt.

In order of their distances from the Sun, the planets are Mercury , Venus , Earth , Mars , Jupiter , Saturn , Uranus , and Neptune.

Don’t Waist Your Breath

18 09 2006

Trouble breathing?
That spare tire may be to blame.

Belly fat is the ringleader in a gang of health woes whose members wreak physical havoc — we’re talking insulin resistance, high blood pressure, bad blood fats, and out-of-whack glucose metabolism.
The perfect setup for cardiovascular disease.

Now abdominal fat is wanted for another crime — taking your breath away. Walking and calorie-counting can help, but your leading defense against a bulging belly is resistance training.

Abdominal fat leaves less room for your lungs to expand and it’s bosom buddies with insulin resistance, a condition that increases inflammation in your body, which reduces lung function and makes it harder to breathe.

Resistance training — any workout that makes your muscles press or pull against a weight, such as curling a can of beans or pushing your own body weight off the floor — can help you breathe easier.

You also can use stretchy tubing or gym machines to help build bulging muscles instead of a burgeoning waistline.

Muscle burns more calories than fat, even when you’re sleeping, which can give you the extra boost you need to say bye-bye to an expanding middle and hello to deep, satisfying breaths.

STORIES – The Magical Mustard Seed

16 09 2006

If you’ve ever lost a loved one, you would know that the emotional pain involved is one of the hardest to bear. It is critical for us to learn how to deal with the sorrow of a loved one’s passing, because every one of us is bound to experience it at some point in our lives.

There is an old Chinese tale about a woman whose only son died. In her grief, she went to a holy man and said, “What prayers, what magical incantations do you have to bring my son back to life?”

Instead of sending her away or reasoning with her, he said to her, “Fetch me a mustard seed from a home that has never known sorrow. We will use it to drive the sorrow out of your life.”
The woman went off at once in search of that magical mustard seed.

She came first to a splendid mansion, knocked at the door, and said, “I am looking for a home that has never known sorrow. Is this such a place? It is very important to me.”
They told her, “You’ve certainly come to the wrong place,” and began to describe all the tragic things that recently had befallen them.

The woman said to herself, “Who is better able to help these poor, unfortunate people than I, who has had misfortune of my own?” She stayed to comfort them, then went on in search of a home that had never known sorrow.

But wherever she turned, in hovels and in other places, she found one tale after another of sadness and misfortune. She became so involved in ministering to other people’s grief that ultimately she forgot about her quest for the magical mustard seed, never realizing that it had, in fact, driven the sorrow out of her life.

When we’re reeling from the shock of losing a loved one, we invariably dwell on the loss we have to grapple with. The focus is what we’ve lost. What we’ll never be able to see again. This inevitably makes us feel even sorrier for ourselves. This forces the grief to concentrate and possibly bury us.

In order to help the sorrow dissipate, consider helping others. They might be trying to get over a similar loss. They might be poor, old or destitute. Or they might be physically or mentally challenged.

Charity heals the soul, and it will quite possibly also help ease your sorrow.

Gay, Lesbian Consumers Quite Mainstream

15 09 2006

September 14, 2006

Most gay consumers prefer to bank at Royal Bank of Canada, drive a car made by Honda, use a Rogers cellphone and have a Visa credit card, according to a reader survey by Xtra, a national newspaper for gays and lesbians.

The survey, based on roughly 1,000 respondents, is among the few to measure consumer choices among gays and lesbians in Canada, says Dino Bertucci, advertising and marketing manager at Xtra.

A majority of respondents to the survey — 55 per cent — had a university education and more than a quarter had annual household income over $100,000.
About half own their home and 23 per cent own a business.
More than 30 per cent have in excess of $100,000 to invest.
Mr. Bertucci said the vast majority of those surveyed — 84 per cent — had no children, meaning they had more time and money to spend than other consumers.

Over all, the survey found that Xtra readers spend $470-million annually on automobiles and $200-million on fashion and beauty products.
They also have $3.4-billion in mortgages and spend $64-million annually on home electronics. And they drink 1.5 million beers per month.

Mr. Bertucci said Xtra plans a broader survey next year and has invited advertisers to suggest questions for the gay community about products and services.

Xtra publishes across Canada and has about 175,000 readers.

Activism is the rent we pay for living on earth

14 09 2006

i m moved by tis quote.

activism is not limited to being concerned abt the environment or protecting the rights of unprivileged & oppressed few.

my intepretation of activisim is to haf a genuine concern for EVERYTHING tat goes on ard u AND to haf the courage to STAND UP & TAKE ACTION to correct any ‘wrong’ tat u see.

yes, it sounds awfully self-righteous yet it is exactly tis strong sense of self-righteousness tat keep ppl disciplined & acting in a morally responsible manner.

it need not be always campaigning or protesting or picketing.
it can be something as simple as voicing out when u spot a mistake at work.

the spirit should b so internalised tat it’s an automatic reaction to speak up.

and sad to say, it is NEVER cultivated in our young when in skools.

i m fortunate to haf frens sharing the same beliefs and i believe the strong chinese education background plays a part too. chinese education emphasize on moral education & thought leadership.

and i m even more fortunate to work in a company tat stresses integrity and encourages constructive confrontation. yes, tat is the msg we get from the CEO himself.

we exhibit our activism in our feedback abt service gone wrong and being brave enuff to confront authority in a constructive manner

i find it extremely sad when ppl keep quiet & suffer in silence or choose to ignore wat they r unhappy abt, whether it’s work or in the family.

and these r not the poorly educated or uneducated.
these r the ‘elites’ wif at least a degree under their belt.

if we can’t tell rite from wrong
if we dun even haf the courage to speak up
den frankly, i tink all the ‘education’ we got is wasted.

wat the education system has produced is someone hoo has earned a paper yet is NOT a learned person.

one good example was when i excited told my fren abt the rallies during GE2006.
he turned ard and asked mi ‘why do u like such things?
i haf no answer for him den as his reaction surprised mi.
it’s not a matter of wat i like.
it’s a matter of being a responsible Singaporean and setting a good example to my children tat every vote counts & must be exercised carefully.
if i had shown the same disinterest as my fren, wat kind of altitude will my kids grow up wif?

Stamp out FRAUD

13 09 2006

American Express Co., Morgan Stanley’s Discover Financial Services division, MasterCard Inc., Visa International Inc. and Japan’s JCB Co. formed an independent group to help prevent debit- and credit-card fraud.

PCI Security Standards Council LLC will maintain worldwide security standards to protect accountholders’ data and produce a list of qualified security-service providers on its Web site, the companies said today in a joint statement.

Merchants and other business partners may face fines if they’re out of compliance with the rules, which mandate such security measures as maintaining computer firewalls and changing vendor-supplied defaults for system passwords.

Retailers including BJ’s Wholesale Club Inc. and Retail Ventures Inc.’s DSW Shoe Warehouse have been the target in recent months of identity thieves who obtained information including credit-card numbers. The card companies said today the council will help blunt such attacks by making merchants conform to a uniform policy, erasing confusion caused by different regulations at each of the companies.

‘By giving everyone in the payments chain a clear single standard it makes being compliant much more simple,’ Rob Tourt, vice president of network services for Discover, said in an interview. ‘As technology changes, we also need a body to react quickly with one voice to emerging threats.’

Each card brand will be responsible for making sure its business partners adhere to the standards, Tourt said.

The single set of standards will also help lower costs for merchants, payment processors and financial institutions, the companies said.

Other rules include encrypting the transmission of cardholder data over public networks, regularly updating anti-virus software and assigning a unique ID to each person with computer access.

Wall Street Journal , September 08, 2006

MasterCard Inc., seeking to tap a larger share of the affluent market, is launching a line of credit cards aimed at households with annual incomes of more than $250,000.

The first card in the series, announced yesterday, is aimed at customers of Saks Inc.’s upscale retailer Saks Fifth Avenue and will be issued by Britain’s HSBC Holdings PLC. The card, called Saks Fifth Avenue World Elite MasterCard, will carry no annual fee and sport a hefty interest rate of 22.65%.

It is the latest in a flood of “co-branded” cards that are linked to specific rewards programs from a particular retailer or airline. Saks already has a proprietary card that can be used only in its stores. The new card will be tied to Saks’s existing rewards program and also offer other perks, such as a free companion airline ticket with the purchase of a full-fare business-class international ticket.

During the past several years, MasterCard and Visa USA Inc. have taken aim at American Express Co.’s traditional hold on the affluent market by offering their own high-end programs to banks that issue plastic.

MasterCard’s upper-end card is called “World,” while Visa uses the name “Signature.” The cards typically offer premium perks and have been aimed at households with an annual income of at least $125,000.

The cards also have generated controversy because merchants typically pay a higher fee to the bank issuers when consumers use these cards compared with traditional cards.

With the new offering, MasterCard is further parsing the affluent market segment by creating another level of cards within it. At the same time, MasterCard is seeking to distinguish itself from Visa, which is widely perceived as having a bigger hold on these consumers.

Nilson Report, which tracks the card industry, estimates that there are 4.9 million MasterCard World cards in circulation, compared with 7.9 million Visa Signature cards.

“This platform will help us with this very high-end segment,” said Walt Macnee, president of the Americas for MasterCard, based in Purchase, N.Y.

Visa, meanwhile, says that the Signature card makes up 3.9% of its consumer credit-card accounts. The card accounts for 20% of Visa’s sales volume; cardholders spend an average $28,000 a year on each card.

MasterCard shares rose $1.24, or 2%, to $60.12, on the New York Stock Exchange.

‘Generation Plastic’ Spending Analyzed

12 09 2006

Visa U.S.A. Inc. said purchases by young people have boosted its volume for low-cost purchases.
The San Francisco card association said last week that its first-half volume of transactions of less than $25 rose 17% from the same period last year, to $27.3 billion.

A key factor was consumers aged 18 to 25, a group Visa calls Generation Plastic or Generation P. According to Visa, 60% of those consumers prefer to use their card for transactions of less than $25, and they are 20% more likely than their parents to use payment cards for small purchases.

Visa said it surveyed 1,154 cardholders from all age groups and found that 86% said they used cards for convenience, 62% because they are easy to use, 45% to manage expenses, and 35% because of other benefits offered.

According to Visa, members of Generation P use debit cards for 44% of their everyday small purchases, compared with 33% of cardholders over 45. The younger respondents said that they are more likely to use debit cards than other payment types, and that they often rely on debit cards linked to a bank account to track their purchases.

“Generation P doesn’t remember when ATMs and debit cards didn’t exist,” Niki Manby, a Visa senior vice president of product innovation, said in a press release.

Bringing Gen Y Aboard for the Long Haul

12 09 2006

Integrating the roaming `entitlement generation’ into the workplace is often a challenge.

For graduating college seniors, the job market is, well, awesome, dude: Hiring is up sharply and corporate competition for the class of 2006 is hot.

But for employers, the real challenge isn’t getting the freshly minted grads to sign on. It’s getting them to stay.

Employers and hiring experts say the younger generation no longer approaches the first job as a nest for the next 10 or five or even three years.

“There’s no longer a stigma in changing jobs frequently,” said Eileen Kohan, executive director of USC’s career center. “It’s not unnatural for someone to have several jobs in their first five years out of college.”

That revolving door is costly to employers. Every recruit gone after a year or so represents the loss of about 1.5 times the worker’s salary for costs associated with recruiting, training and the like, according to Saratoga, a San Jose-based unit of PricewaterhouseCoopers.

“The war for talent has shifted,” Saratoga director Scott Pollak said. “You still want to recruit, but the new challenge is, how do you keep the best people? Retention is now a big issue.”

To understand exactly how the Generation Y thinks, some employers are hiring consultants schooled in the ways of those born between 1978 and 2000, the usual definition of the group.

Companies are implementing training programs, pairing newbies with seasoned veterans and working on integrating their newest hires in hopes of boosting retention.

Generation Y, the children of baby boomers and Gen-Xers, is often described as the entitlement generation.

Gen-Yers arrive at their first jobs with high expectations. After driving hard to be accepted to top schools and pumping up their resumes with myriad extracurricular activities and internships, many young grads expect a lush ride in the corporate world.

But while the job market may have changed, corporate culture hasn’t.

Many entry-level positions still require making copies, fact-checking reports and taking the blame when the manager messes up. In industries such as Hollywood, no matter how many calculus classes the wunderkind has taken, the new kid on the block will still be asked to get coffee.

And new hires may not be ready for that kind of sacrifice.

Generation Y “tends to want, and want it now,” said Carol Hacker, president of Carol A. Hacker & Associates in Alpharetta, Ga., a corporate consulting and seminar company.

“They don’t want to take the time that it takes to work up. They expect that that’s going to happen pretty quickly,” she added.

Since he graduated from Stanford University in 2004 with a degree in human biology, Paul O’Leary’s career path has been consistently inconsistent. At the age of 25, he’s on job No. 5. O’Leary went to Japan for a stint as a gymnastics coach, worked as a salesman for Bose Corp. and held jobs at Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc.

“I have a pretty clear idea of what I want to get out of my career,” O’Leary said. “When it gets to the point where the management or the company no longer seems in line with what I have in mind, I start looking elsewhere.”

O’Leary finally found a good fit at LowerMyBills.com, a Santa Monica outfit that allows consumers to compare rates on monthly bills online.

An account manager at LowerMyBills.com, the Los Angeles resident was impressed that his supervisor asked about his career goals.

Also, O’Leary said he was looking for a company that was willing to take a chance on a relatively recent grad with little experience but strong motivation.

“I wanted a position with responsibility, and it took me a little while to find the company that was willing to give that to me,” O’Leary said.

Introducing new hires to the wide array of jobs available within a company is how Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide has dealt with young people who aren’t quite ready to commit to one career path.

The New York company offers a one-year rotational program, giving young grads a chance to sample what the company has to offer before settling into a permanent role, said Trish Hamilton, Ogilvy’s human resource manager.

Vital to the program’s success is constant evaluation and personal development, Hamilton said.
“I work very closely with each associate, sitting down with them every two months and guiding them through their career,” she said.

Consistently checking in with young workers is one of the most important ways managers can foster a good working relationship with Gen-Yers, said Bruce Tulgan, the founder of RainmakerThinking Inc., a management consulting company based in New Haven, Conn.

“The key is having an ongoing dialogue,” he said. Tulgan recommends “spelling out expectations every step of the way and being honest with folks about how they’re doing.”

With young workers just stepping out of the classroom, the more specific the expectations, the better people respond, said Carol Cincotta, senior vice president and human resources director at New York-based Ketchum, an international public relations agency.

Ketchum uses in-house training and consultants to teach its young associates about core practices of the business and even whether walking around the office with iPod earphones is frowned upon.

“No one teaches that in school,” Cincotta said.

Ketchum also is starting a one-year rotation program similar to Ogilvy’s, giving account associates the chance to work through different departments in the firm, with regular feedback sessions.

Although many companies in the finance, consulting and technology fields have programs to teach hard skills, including how to build financial models, soft skills programs — which emphasize workplace politics, career development and communication — are increasingly in vogue.

Many employers, particularly small businesses without the resources to hire consultants, find that simply pairing young workers with mentors can be a good way to integrate the new hires into company culture.

“They can be either peers, people that have recently come to the company who they can relate to or people who have been with the organization for a number of years whom they can respect,” said Mark Mehler, co-founder of CareerXroads, a Kendall Park, N.J., consulting company.

In 1999, Clifton Gunderson, an accounting and consulting firm based in Peoria, Ill., started a career development network to pair senior managers or partners with newer hires. In the program, the more recent arrivals have an opportunity to create career paths with a mentor, “someone who cares about you and who knows how to take you where you want to go,” said Lauren Malensek, the firm’s chief human resource officer.

The mentorship program has been one of the most successful components of the firm’s training and professional development program, offering tangible results, Malensek said.

If all fails and a young hire walks into the office to give two weeks’ notice, offer to stay connected in case future opportunities arise, said RainmakerThinking’s Tulgan.

“Stay in touch with people and try to re-recruit them,” Tulgan said. “The goal from a business standpoint should be to continue to get a return on the investment.”

A Column on (Your Product Here) Placement

12 09 2006

Those consumers who prefer their entertainment unbranded — that is, without the products, logos and other trappings of advertisers embedded in the content — are in for a disappointing decade, according to a new report.

The report, scheduled to be released today, predicts that marketers will remain enamored with placing products wherever they can: in movies, television and radio shows; on Web sites; in video games; in lyrics; in newspaper and magazine articles; and even in the plots of novels.

Product placement is an example of a phenomenon known as ad creep, in which popular culture grows increasingly commercialized. As technology enables consumers to avoid or skip over ads, by using devices like digital video recorders or iPods, marketers are trying to restore the balance in their favor by placing ads where consumers cannot miss them.

The study, from PQ Media, a research company in Stamford, Conn., covers not only the United States, the largest market by far for product placement, but also 14 other countries. It is the first time that PQ has compiled data about — and offered forecasts for — product placement practices overseas.

Placing products in the content offered by entertainment media abroad has lagged for several reasons, including the slower pace of development for commercial television networks in countries where government-run TV has been the norm.

But just as French and British consumers can now shop at American-style convenience stores, the practice of product placement is gaining popularity overseas. In fact, the European Union is considering rules that would liberalize what are now strictures on — and in some instances, virtual prohibitions against — the inclusion of products and brands.

“Product placement has emerged as a key marketing strategy worldwide,” said Patrick Quinn, president at PQ, who offered a preview of the report in a telephone interview yesterday.
“There’s a new media order emerging,” Mr. Quinn said, “fueled by a fear of ad-skipping technology, doubts about traditional advertising’s effectiveness and, in some countries, a search for new revenue streams as government subsidies decline.

“As brand marketers are seeking to effectively engage consumers with an emotional connection, product placement is no longer a novel tactic and is increasing dramatically.”
The PQ report tracks several types of product placements. One type is paid placements, where marketers spend money to weave their wares into the plots, scripts and content of entertainment offerings. Another type is barter, when, for instance, an airline provides tickets to the producers of a TV series in exchange for the airline appearing or being mentioned in an episode.
Spending on paid placements worldwide will reach $3.1 billion this year, the PQ report forecasts, compared with $2.2 billion in 2005. The United States led last year with $1.5 billion in paid placements, the report says, followed by Brazil, Australia, France and Japan.

By 2010, the report predicts, worldwide paid placements will total almost $7.6 billion.
If the European Union approves the changes under consideration, called the Television Without Frontiers Directive, there could be triple-digit percentage increases in the money that marketers spend in Europe for paid placements, the report says.

Spending on all types of placements, according to the report, will total $7.4 billion this year, compared with just under $6 billion in 2005. The United States was also first last year in all placements, at $4.5 billion, followed by Brazil, Japan, Australia and France.

By 2010, the report forecasts, all worldwide placements will total almost $14 billion.
Placements are “going to be an integral part of the business” for the foreseeable future, said Dick Lippin, chairman and chief executive at the Lippin Group in Los Angeles, a public relations and marketing agency. Lippin is forming a unit, called Brand to Hollywood, meant to help advertisers forge ties between products and celebrities as well as between products and events in the entertainment industry like award shows.

When Mr. Lippin started his agency in 1986, he said, marketers were content to just run commercials during TV shows; the few ways to dodge the spots included using remote controls or leaving the room.

Today, Mr. Lippin said, because “technology has had a tremendous effect on what consumers watch and don’t watch,” the marketers “are coming to us asking how to place their products and brands into the entertainment world, for maximum effectiveness.”

The list of marketers engaged in product placement and branded entertainment is lengthening each week, particularly online. Their ranks were once dominated by makers of packaged foods, soft drinks and other lower-priced products, which could be easily inserted into the background of a scene.

But that is changing, as illustrated by the five sponsors of “Gold Rush,” a game in the form of a seven-week, online reality series from Mark Burnett Productions, the creator of placement-laden programs like “The Apprentice” on NBC and “Survivor” on CBS.

“Gold Rush,” which is to begin on Sept. 13 on a Web site operated by the AOL division of Time Warner (aol.com/goldrush), will have only one packaged-goods sponsor, the Coca-Cola Zero brand sold by the Coca-Cola Company. The others are a retailer, Best Buy; an automaker, the Chevrolet division of General Motors; a wireless carrier, T-Mobile; and a bank, Washington Mutual.

The placements will include using Chevrolet cars and trucks to drive contestants to competitions — and to transport the $2.2 million in gold to be hidden around the country that lends the series its name.

AOL has included product placement in previous online series like “The Biz,” sponsored by Chevrolet and Sprint, but those were “baby steps” compared with its aggressive pursuit of sponsors for “Gold Rush,” said Kathleen Kayse, executive vice president for sales and partnership alliances at the AOL Media Networks unit of AOL in New York.

The biggest problem with product placement and branded entertainment is how often projects blur or cross the line that traditionally separates editorial content and advertising, potentially alienating the consumers they are meant to woo.

“We’ve got experience understanding what consumers are willing to accept as entertainment and what they are not willing to accept as commercialization,” Ms. Kayse said.
“The last thing we want to do is put the consumer in the position of feeling it’s too commercialized,” she added.

on another note, i started reading Business As Unusual by The Body Shop’s founder. i’m onli at the first few pages though i bought the book a long time back.

i m interested in her new age business model. one tat places the interests of others before one’s own selfish gains and is socially & environmentally responsible.

it would b interesting to noe how many of the above listed companies actualli conduct business wif a conscience.

McDonald’s has come under fire for their unhealthy menu tat is destroying Americans’ health from young, not to mention most other developed countries.

And Disney is under fire for their meagre wages paid to make their merchandise. Even the newly opened Disney in HK were accused of subjecting its employees to poor working conditions & unacceptably long working hours.

And can Coke boasts of any health benefits? It can’t even claim to haf no detrimental effect on one’s health if consumed regularly. And it is highly addictive.

MALE OR FEMALE?

12 09 2006

Ziploc bags are male because they hold everything in but you can see right through them

Photocopiers are female because once turned off, it takes forever to warm them up again

A car tyre is male because it goes bald and is often over-inflated

Sponges are female because they are soft, squeezable and retain water

A web page is female because it is always getting hit on

The MRT is male because it uses the same old lines to pick people up

Tornadoes are female because they howl like mad when they come and take the house when they leave

Floor tiles are female because if you lay them right the first time, you can walk all over them for years to come

Beer bottles are male because they are empty from the neck up

Police cars are female because they make a lot of noise to let you know they are coming

M & Ms are female because they come in assorted colours but they all taste the same

A balloon is male. One quick stab and it’s all over

possible causes :
-too much screaming at YY on sat

-eating BBQ food on sat nite at steve’s place

i had a feeling my throat wasn’t too well on sat so i had a coconut but i guess the cooling effect wasn’t tat fantastic.

Bliss cafe @ punggol park

8 09 2006

joc brought mi to Bliss Cafe @ Punggol park for dinner.

wat a nice place! the ambience & waterfront seating is the perfect setting for a relaxing evening.

food is nice & served beli quickly and they haf such a wide selection of wines. they serve mainly western wif finger foods. and pricing is reasonable. less den $20 for a set.

though the carpark is rite behind the cafe, the lots are so few. it may b a good idea to park at the flats opp & walk over. the place was packed for a thurs nite. we got there abt 9.30pm and it was still packed when we left at 11pm. i suspect most of the patrons live in the area.

i would nbr haf found tis place if joc hasn’t pointed it out. i mean, i passed by punggol park so often yet i nbr noticed the cafe. quite well hidden from the main rd yet so accessible.

i regret to say tat i haf no shots to show off as i was bz wif the 2 kiddos.

but tat gifs mi an excuse to go there again soon for my shots…haha

New air freshener

8 09 2006

i m ever on a quest to find the most effective & economical air freshener.

fellow car owners will agree tat air fresheners cost a bomb.

i was renewing my road tax at the post office when i noticed tat they were selling Goodaire products. u noe, the air freshener tat has liquids swishing in a fish bowl looking tank.

anyway, they carried 3 kinds of air fresheners. the fish bowl kind for duno how much.

the plug in mini fish bowl kind for the air which i decided against since my car is out in the sun all day. i suspect the liquid will dry up beli quickly

and lastly the mini clip-on type which i got.

$6.80 for a starter set and $3.80 for refills. reasonably priced, onli catch is it says on the box tat it’ll onli last 2 wks so we shall see.

the scent is quite faint though i ‘on’ it to max liao.

compared to glade puffing, i prefer the latter for the constant delivery of scent, juz tat it finishes so quickly!

My lunch & evening snack

8 09 2006

my lunch : the ever popular blanco court fish soup. totally delicious. haben had it in a while since the price hike from $3 to $4. and the queue puts mi off too.

evening snack : since mum is vegetarian for the day, we had a pre-dinner snack of rochor beancurd. heard abt beancurd city from su sin but haben been there since its opening

even rochor beancurd has made some changes. they converted some of the indoor seating area to a dough making area & they sell ‘you tiao’, ‘hum jin peng’ & ‘butterfly fritters’ now. pretty to go wif ‘dou jiang’ i suppose. onli i dun take dou jiang…haha

mi is strictly a beancurd fan but i swear off all other soy bean products.

and the flour snacks passed my mum’s taste test. nice

Beautiful tulips

8 09 2006

nope, no roses still but i tink the tulips are beautiful.

tis particular bunch is karen’s & wende’s.

currently in my car till i next see them to deliver the ‘goods’

Smelling the roses

8 09 2006

no, tis posting will not feature any roses.

but i was happily snapping some shots of the scenery while in the car.

and i refer to tis as taking time out to smell the roses.

being trigger happy is pretty theraupatic for mi : )

Carpal tunnel syndrome??

8 09 2006

though the title of tis posting is Carpal tunnel syndrome, tat refers to a suspected condition of my right wrist.

the first 4 pictures are of my left wrist which developed an unexplained soreness/pain in the morning and progressively became a bruise by the end of the day.

wat i wana highlight, is the location of the bruise.

i haf no idea where i got tis bruise from but the pain is mirrored in my right hand

imagine the pain in the same spot as above, just mirrored.

now my wrist nbr developed any bruising so i suspect Carpal tunnel syndrome.

and gaming is not the onli culprit, my other love, crocheting used to cause mi such pain too.

Tulip Hearts Day for Children’s Cancer Foundation

7 09 2006

aren’t the tulips juz lovely?

i luv seeing them in a bunch. so colourful & cheery.

brenda, samie & moi went ard the 19th floor & took some orders. we ended up wif $1,020 worth of pre-orders.

we were surprised at the results and generosity of my colleagues. wat started out as a casual & very personal level kinda initiative can make a huge difference if ppl were to put juz a little more effort

i tink most ppl would love to do their part for charity but everyone’s so bz to b able to find time & plan resources for charity work.

i guess these adhoc & small gestures gif ppl the opportunity to help, on a platter.

and tat’s y the response was excellent & i didn’t expected the orders to amt to so much.

and to b honest, i dun tink we even tried beli hard.

on the left, the lovely tulips on my slightly crowded desk.

On gays, drugs and news

7 09 2006

mi has been keeping a shorthand book to jot dwn my random thots.

however, there is a serious lag between penning dwn my thots & their transit to bloggerland.

there was some extensive reporting on CNB’s crackdown on gay drug abusers thru online chatrooms.

i thot it was such a skewed report. the 2 cases are namely the teacher and the doctor who agreed to mit the CNB personnel wif drugs and were subsequently apprehended. surely CNB can boast of many times more of the 2 cases that were highlighted in the news? y were the 2 cases singled out for extensive reporting?

i feel tat it’s pure bias against the sexual inclination of the offenders. somehow the method used by CNB in luring out the offenders seems like a blow below the belt.

while i’m sure there r many many more times the number of offenders who r heterosexual, y doesn’t CNB apply the same tactic & lure these offenders out? y target onli the gay community?

sometimes, i m beli disappointed by the quality or rather the screening done to the ‘official’ news namely on TV & television. even radio stations are so controlled. there’s no freedom of speech in sg yet the suppression will onli lead to a greater reaction and in tis IT age, there is no lack of avenues for expressing our views as well as reading the ‘real’ news.

under karen & alex’s strong recommendation, i haf made a switch in my morning station from class 95 to UFM 1003 and i haben regretted my decision since.

the healthy xchange of views & candid remarks often bring on the smiles & few chuckles. and i luv getting the brain juices flowing while following the xchange. kinda like warm-up exercises for my brain. will blog more abt the topics tat were covered on the programme which i found beli interesting and my take on it.

Researchers Focus On Twins

There are few issues as hotly contested — and as poorly understood — as the question of what makes a person gay or straight.
It’s not only a political, social, and religious question but also a scientific question, one that might someday have an actual, provable answer.
The handful of scientists who work in this under-funded and politically charged field will tell you: That answer is a long way off.
But as Lesley Stahl reports, their efforts are already yielding tantalizing clues.
One focus of their research is twins.

The bedrooms of 9-year-old twins Adam and Jared couldn’t be more different.
Jared’s room is decked out with camouflage, airplanes, and military toys, while Adam’s room sports a pastel canopy, stuffed animals, and white horses.
When Stahl came for a visit, Jared was eager to show her his G.I. Joe collection. “I have ones that say like Marine and SWAT.
And then that’s where I keep all the guns for ‘em,” he explained.
Adam was also proud to show off his toys. “This is one of my dolls. Bratz baby,” he said.
Adam wears pinkish-purple nail polish, adorned with stars and diamonds.
Asked if he went to school like that, Adam says, “Uh-huh. I just showed them my nails, and they were like, ‘Why did you do that?’”

Check out Public Eye’s coverage of the reaction to the story, which includes producer Shari Finkelstein’s response to critics, here and here.
Adam’s behavior is called childhood gender nonconformity, meaning a child whose interests and behaviors are more typical of the opposite sex.
Research shows that kids with extreme gender nonconformity usually grow up to be gay. Danielle, Adam and Jared’s mom, says she began to notice this difference in Adam when he was about 18 months old and began asking for a Barbie doll.
Jared, meanwhile, was asking for fire trucks.
Not that much has changed. Jared’s favorite game now is Battlefield 2, Special Forces.
As for Adam, he says, “It’s called Neopets: The Darkest Faerie.”
Asked how he would describe himself to a stranger, Jared says, “I’m a kid who likes G.I. Joes and games and TV.”
“I would say like a girl,” Adam replied to the same question.
When asked why he thinks that is, Adam shrugged.
“To me, cases like that really scream out, ‘Hey, it’s not out there. It’s in here.”
There’s no indication that this mother is prone to raise very feminine boys because his twin is not that way,” says Michael Bailey, a psychology professor at Northwestern University and a leading researcher in the field of sexual orientation.

Bailey says he doesn’t think nurture is a plausible explanation.
Psychologists used to believe homosexuality was caused by nurture — namely overbearing mothers and distant fathers — but that theory has been disproved.
Today, scientists are looking at genes, environment, brain structure and hormones.
There is one area of consensus: that homosexuality involves more than just sexual behavior;
it’s physiological.

Worldly Possessions

7 09 2006
A very successful lawyer parked his brand-new Lexus in front of his office,
ready to show it off to his colleagues.
As he got out, a truck passed too close and completely tore off the door on the driver’s side.
The lawyer immediately grabbed his cell phone ;
dialed the police number, and within minutes a traffic warden pulled up.
Before the officer had a chance to ask any questions,
the lawyer started screaming hysterically.
His Lexus, which he had just picked up the day before,
was now completely ruined and would never be the same,
no matter what the body shop did to it.
When the lawyer finally wound down from his ranting and raving,
the officer shook his head in disgust and said :
” I can’t believe how materialistic you lawyers are,” he said.
” You are so focused on your possessions that you don’t notice anything else. ”
” How can you say such a thing ? ” asked the lawyer.
The cop replied,
” Don’t you know that your left arm is missing from the elbow down ?
It must have been torn off when the truck hit you. ”
” My God ! ” screamed the lawyer.
” Where’s my Rolex ? ”

Livia, the right jobs for you would allow you to be Creative and Analytical

5 09 2006

You’re a visionary in many people’s eyes — able to think outside of the box to come up with your own solutions.

You’re creative not necessarily in the artistic sense, but because you can expand your mind to do things differently from others.

It might take a while for colleagues to recognize and reward for your entrepreneurial spirit and abilities. That could be because they envy you, or because they find your ideas slightly rebellious — willing to go against the current.

All in all, you make it hard for people to pigeon hole you.

That is why you, more than others, need a job that allows you to play to your strengths, break out of the mold, and truly excel.

Stretch Yourself to Sleep

5 09 2006

You might associate stretching with waking up, but it can help you nod off, too.

So if you have trouble falling asleep, trade in the tossing and turning for a simple, gentle, daily stretching routine instead.

Women who regularly stretch out their knots and kinks fall asleep more easily than nonstretchers do.

Stretching isn’t the only exercise factor that affects how well you sleep.
Getting regular exercise of any kind can help improve your shut-eye.

Just be mindful of the time of day you do it and how long you go at it.

If you prefer to exercise at night, research shows that shorter is better in terms of sleep quality — evening exercisers get more shut-eye if they work out for no more than 3 hours a week.

But finding a different time to be active, if you can swing it, is probably better for your health than cutting back on how much you exercise.

Morning exercisers might need to work out longer to experience sleep benefits — at least 3 hours and 45 minutes a week.

Why isn’t clear, but that’s no reason to give up on improving your nightlife with a morning walk or jog. Just set that alarm and get yourself into a routine.
It won’t be long until you’re falling out of bed and into your gym shoes before the alarm even goes off.

And for even better sleep, add some gentle stretching to your routine — it could make all the difference.

Oh, one little alert: Avoid intense exercise within 3 hours of bedtime; revving your system with a hard workout can wake you up just when you’re trying to wind down.

All About YOU: It’s Okay to Cry

4 09 2006

Don’t hold back the tears.

According to the RealAge doctors, a good cry now and then may do a body good.

Just as sweat removes salt, urine removes waste, and mucus traps bacteria, tears also serve a purpose.
Emotional tears — shed in moments of intense feeling — carry stress hormones and are a way of getting rid of them.
Even if crying embarrasses you, it signals that you’ve reached a level of stress that’s detrimental to your health. So let it out.

Your body makes several kinds of tears:
Basal tears are produced continuously to keep your eyes lubricated; that layer of moisture also helps prevent damage from air currents and bits of floating debris.

Irritant tears are produced when the eyes are hit by flying sand, grit, insects, etc.

Emotional tears are released in moments of intense feeling — sometimes joy, but more often sorrow. Unlike basal or irritant tears, which are protective, emotional tears are hormonal and chemically different.
One major hormone that increases with stress is also associated with crying: prolactin.
Levels of prolactin in the body correlate positively with frequency of emotional crying.
